I am sure many of you knew Harry for his controversial posts. He sure stirred things up on the forum. He left a message for me yesterday to give him a call. I just returned the call and his wife answered the phone sounding very sad. When I asked to speak to Harry she informed me he died of a heart attack in his sleep this morning.

Harry was a gifted guitar player and teacher and he played pedal steel okay. He was one of my first customers. It is hard to believe he was in his early fifties and appeared to be in okay health and just like that he is gone. God Bless you Harry.

Wow...
Poor Harry. He was just inquiring about sleep apnea last week, here on the Forum.
My condolences to his Family.

It's a wierd life.
Similar to Bruces phone call to Harry, I called my best skiing buddy last week to arrange a day on the slopes.
His mother-in-law answered with the dreaded "Didn't you hear what happened?...".
He was killed in a head on collision coming home from the slopes last weekend.

What can we do but carry on the torch.

I always enjoyed Harrys posts about his meeting Jerry Garcia at a party and jamming with the members of The Grateful Dead on Jerrys guitar while Jerry snuck away for a bathroom break.

As the song says... "If there's a Rock&Roll Heaven, You know they have a hell of a band!"

That is a sorry announcement, and as I'm writing this, I see that if you scroll down a little, there's Harry's thread.

I didn't know Harry and never had any correspondence with him. I only know of him through his posts and a couple of photos of him that were posted.

This internet is a strange and unique world. I'm saddened and although never knew him, I can't help but feel some kind of connection. I never knew him and yet I'll miss him.

RIP Harry.......

I'm shocked. I first got to know him when he was starting his Rhythm Tracks project.

He was so devoted to caring for his ailing father, who passed away about two years ago.

My prayers are with his family.

What?? Shocked and amazed. Stunned really. I think Harry would like to be remembered as a guy who gave his all to make sure that his dad's final years were comfortable. He went the extra mile in a way not many people would do. They are now reunited, but way too soon.

Harry and I butted heads a bit, mostly because he came on pretty strong here on the Forum. Still, I felt a connection to the guy, and I'm saddened to hear of his passing. He was a good guy, an entrepreneur full of new ideas. His backup tracks were really well done - perhaps they are his best legacy to the steel community.

My condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Harry.

Wow...Where to start...I certainly had my share of disagreements with Harry, but Harry believed in himself, and had "courage of his convictions." The kind of guy who DEFINITELY left an impression.
My prayers, and my deepest sympathy, are with Harry's family. May God's love encompass their sorrow.

Like everyone else here that knew Harry from his posting on this Forum-all i can say is
"WOW". i never expected to read something like this tonight when i got home & checked..
My 1st thought was someone's got the wrong name. I will always remember & admire Harry for the devotion he showed toward his Father in his last couple of years of his life.He will be missed & like most of us here- he did stand by his convictions.Rest Easy...

I am just shocked as many others to hear about Harry Hess. We coressponded quite regularly and he used to tell me how he was taking care of his Dad. He thought the world of him.

I have all of his backup tracks CD's and they are very good.

All intruments on the tracks were played by Harry. I hope his family will still make them available to Steel players.

I always thought he was in such good health, you never know, do you.?
Rest in Peace ,Harry, you paid your dues.....al

I wonder, was it really a sudden heart attack, or perhaps the sleep apnea that he was so worried about in the past week...

My Lord,
I am Shocked to say the least. May you R.I.P, Harry. I pray for his wife and Familey. I remember talking to Harry every day, sometimes,(and this is TRUE, Folks, ask Ron Jr. at Emmons) 25-35 times a DAY when we repaired one of his steels' at the Emmons Co. He was a Very Persistant Fellow to say the least, and I often thought of him as having his own ideas about thing pertaining to the insrument he so dearly loved. He Did have a way of "Rubbing You the wrong way" sometimes, but, he had a very cool sense of humor also. He "Butted Heads" with Ol' Jim Aycoth (Owner of Emmons in 1999, 2000 for you "Newbies)many times too, and would ask for Ron Jr. EVERY day wanting to know the progress of the repair of his steel. You NEVER know when the Good Lord will call you and take you to the "Other side".

Harry was very close to me and this is a big, big shock. He was concerned with my sleep disorder as well and gave me a lot of advice. I can't believe he isn't here.

When his father passed we shared many posts on the Forum and e-mail. It's almost like I should send him a note or something.....

Goodbye Harry ! Regards, Paul

What a shock.... Very very sad, indeed. I'm still a beginning player, and I've spent a lot of time cutting my teeth on Harry's accompaniment tracks. In that way, Harry has done a lot of good for me. He even graciously let me use a track of his as backup for an public demo I did about 1-1/2 years back.

A very sad day.

I only knew Harry through the forum and did get his back up tracks. Sad to see him leave at such an early time of life. My thoughts are with his family.

I don't think in his wildest dreams that b0b
would have imagined that the forum would evolve into the community that it has.
Kudos to you my friend It has to make you proud of what has happened here.

It's always sad to have someone leave us.
2 weeks ago my cousin, (who's also one of my dearest friends) had to say goodbye to his wife. The second wife to have passed in the past 5 years, both only 57 years old.

One day we'll all know more people on the other side than we know here. What a welcome we'll receive as we are wafted off into the eternities.

Very, very sad.

I've known Harry since the mid-70's, probably 1974 or 75. He was down here playing with Doug Sahm and some of the San Antonio West Side guys. Part of the invasion of pickers from the East and West, myself included, that came to TX to participate in the country-rock scene that was so hot here during that period of time.

My take then was that Harry, as here on the Forum, was honest and sincere about his opinions, but was too outspoken and "in-your-face" for a lot of the pickers here. He was, all things considered, a hard-core Yankee in a southern town and was a little out of step with the "good ol' boy redneck/hippie blues/country let's-burn-one-down" ethos that was the current culture amongst the locals.

But they couldn't ignore the fact that the guy could really play! Lead guitar was his main instrument, and he had a brown ShoBud Professional that he played his steel gigs on. He did a long stint with one of the Sir Doug ensembles, then returned back to the East Coast.

I hadn't heard from him in years until he showed up on this Forum a few years ago. We'd occasionally talk on the phone, instruments, amps, that kind of stuff. Sad to see one of my generation go like that. I'll remember him to the guys still around that knew him.

I can't believe this, what a horrible shock! After meeting Harry in a big forum fight, as many of you may remember, three years ago, Harry and I became such great friends and had many many phone calls to talk about doing a teaching method together, to be sold on this forum. He turned out to be a great friend of mine, I appreciated his great intelligence, humor, musical ability and most of all, our friendship. Thank God for this forum, I never would have met him if not for Bobby Lee and this great forum. Rest in peace Harry, we love you buddy-----

I sold Harry a guitar a couple of years ago and there was no haggling etc. But organizing the delivery was something else. We were e-mailing each other 2-4 a day and speaking on the phone as often. This went on for a few weeks and at the end of it we virtually put the guitar delivery on the back burner and were talking about his dad and all the projects he was involved in. Harry seemed to be intensely focussed on whatever he was doing especially taking care of his father.RIP Harry

What a shock this is. Harry and I have never met but because of this great forum we have been emailing each other. I have been using his tracks for practice and we would talk about that among other things. Harry really seemed like a great guy and we had plans to meet in person this summer. Here is the last part of the last email I got from Harry, " As I said in a previous email to you, I'm jealous of you having a grandson. I spent too many years on the road and in the night club circuit. I missed out on having children. It's too late in my life to consider that now because of my age and health concerns."
Rest in peace Harry, you will be missed.

This tragedy wakes me up and makes me realize how much I love all you great wonderful dummies on this incredible forum. I know it will happen again and again until it's me that's gone, then MY pain will be gone, I only hope I will have left some goodness here that will be missed like the great Harry Hess's goodness is missed.
I want to thank all you great people that have shared my sorrow for him and have posted so openly here so far and to future posters. We are a small tight knit community, sharing a love for steel guitar and music that a lot of others folks don't understand. Harry did and I understood him as I do all steel players. Thank you people for caring and understanding.

Oh merde... I am not so much shocked as saddened. I got an e-mail from Kevin Minke this AM saying Harry had passed away, and it took a second in my too early, coffee adled, brain to connect...
and then I just sunk when the connection came.

I had so much wanted Harry to get back on the Apnea CPAP machine while waiting for the operation he intended to get.
For just this reason....
Some of you have seen the large posts I sent to his thread.

Yes CPAP is uncomfortable at first, but so much better than the alternative. And now damn it it's too late... I am SOOOO bummed right now.

Apnea does cause a huge stress on the heart all night long. I, unfortunately, am not surprised it was so sudden, and in his sleep.
Which for me makes it even more horrible.

I didn't know Harry from the big fights, but we had crossed paths, if not swords, in here a few times and I liked his posts. Another loss for us all. And a lesson for others ignoring heavy snoring and apnea.
I didn't remember he played with Doug Sahm and will now look for some CD with him on it to remember him by.

My sincere condolences to Harry's family, friends and forum sparing partners.

I think we all will miss his interesting posts - But one thing that is very important in this message - - SLEEP APNEA -- If this is what happened!
I suffer with this and have to wear a Sleeping harness any time I sleep, and before it was diagnosed, I went to the hospital several times before they decided thats what it was. They told me that after I did a sleep study that I almost died from heart attacks before that because of oxygen levels dropping so low that my blood pressure would climb to 200/100 and pulse would climb to 135!! I know of others that had it and passed away rather than doing the sleep study. Don't ignore this if you are suspicious!

I have just this minute learned of the passing of Harry. I'm shocked and totally stunned.

I never had the privilege of meeting Harry in person, but we shared a lot ot time together by phone and email taking about many things, including his devotion and relationship with his father, and I with mine.

Harry was kind, gentle, caring, loving and a professed believer, which is very comforting to me at this time.

My prayers go to his family, may my dear friend rest in peace, and may we all be constantly reminded of all the true, meaningful and beautiful things in this life while always remembering our friends and what they meant to each of us.

I met Harry up at Boo Millers !st Annual Maryland Jam back in December. I had read some of Harry's post on the Forum..sometimes I would disagree or agree.I think that I might of made some negatine remarks to some of his post. In person..he was somewhat excentric..but very interested in My Carter..and Donny Hinsons' New MSA Melenium. He was trying to sell some of his tracks..and I was going to purchase some ..but he got in a hurry and had to leave. He seemed to be VERY Nervous..and in a hurry...but someone mentioned that ...that was the way harry was. Nervous Energy!!..That's all that I know about Harry... But This sad event makes one ....to..Take a minute...a.deep breath....and Continue to enjoy life as those who have gone before us.

Hi Bob. Harry Hess and I were best friends and guitar buddies here in Philadelphia ford the past four years. He used to tell me about the Forum every so ofter.....and some of the "tiffs" he would get into with some of the guys. It's been great for me to be able to come to this site and read all of the nice things people have said about him. Harry and I were just about ready to start gigging with a country/rock band we were putting together, so this has been a very painful time for me since we didn't get the chance to pursue our dreams together as friends and musicians. Unfortunately, I'm not a member of the Forum and cannot list a post directly. However, I wanted to ask you if you would be kind enough to Harry's friends know on the Forum that his obituary was printed in The Philadelphia Inquirer at the following web site:
