I just spoke with Mary West on the phone, Speedy has been on my mind a lot the past few days, and thought I had better call. My main man, Speedy is in St. Francis hospital in Tulsa with big time respiratory and heart problems. His condition has been vacilating, between feeling pretty good, to almost losing him yesterday. Today he is much better, but may I ask for members to join me in prayer and good wishes for my hero, Speedy West. God Bless Each of You.------------------ Billy Easton Casa Grande, AZ Southwestern Steel Guitar Association

Get well real quick Speedy. The nice things you said to me after our set at the Tulsa Steel Convention of 2001 mean more to me than any compliment I ever received. You have been a huge inspiration to me since I started playing and buying your records back in 1954. Would someone please post on this thread when Speedy can have visitors? Speedy you have my prayers. Jerry Roller[This message was edited by Jerry Roller on 05 November 2003 at 07:07 PM.]

We all owe such a debt to Speedy for his contributions to the steel guitar. He made it much easier for those of us that came along later. May GOD grant Speedy many more years with us. Mary, we love ya'll and will keep ya'll in our prayers. Jody and Georgia. |

Jerry, you've almost been buying Speedy's records as long as I have. I think 52 or 53 was when I started plus all the Ernie Ford, Kay Starr and Bing Crosby records he played on. All of my early heros are gone except Speedy and Les Paul. They represent my formative years and are still very important to me. I've taken on some new heros in recent years but they never take the place of those originals. |

Just to let those friends of Speedy aware. I just spoke with Speedy,he is home from the hospital and is doing OK. He is on oxygen 24 hours a day and he is feeling weak which is normal after what he went through.I told him of all of your posts and well wishes and he asked me to thank all of you for caring as you do. I'll keep in touch with him and keep all of you up to date. He sounded tired, but I had him laughing and thats a good sign. Thanks my friends. Jody |

Devastating news from Broken Arrow. I just got an email from Barbara Martin, of the Western Swing Newsletter here in Austin. I quote: quote: I talked to Jerry Emery, pianoman, just hung up with him. Jerry was over there today, they are friends. In addition to all his physical ailments, Speedy has congestive heart failure, is in a coma, with hospice at home. He was just out of the hospital last time I talked to him, about a month ago, had fallen and broken ribs, also had suffered broken hand earlier. He's been in a lot of pain and really suffering. Bless his heart. Just as kind and generous as they come, a soft heart and so sweet. I am heart broken. A rare legend.
Now is the time for serious prayers, for Speedy's recovery and for his immortal soul. ------------------ Herb's Steel Guitar Pages Texas Steel Guitar Association

I hope I'm not spreading rumors, but this just received from Barbara Martin quote: DON'T HAVE ANY PARTICULARS, BUT JUST GOT WORD FROM HIS SON-IN-LAW, THAT THE GREAT SPEEDY WEST JUST PASSED AWAY THIS AM. I'LL GIVE YOU MORE DETAILS AS SOON AS I CAN. CHUCK HAYES
Another tragedy for the world of steel guitar. The man was a mentor to me and so many others. I now feel as I did when Jimmy Day passed away, complete loss. I trust and pray Speed is with the Father and the Son right now. Bon voyage. |

One of my proudest moments was meeting Speedy at the St. Louis show in 1980. Something I never could have imagined 17 years earlier as a 10 year old kid listening to his "Steel Guitar" album. That record single-handedly hooked me on steel guitar. To this day, I don't see how he did some of those things on that album. The most sincere condolences to the West family, from my family. Mary West just called confirming that Speedy passed away at 9:58am Oklahoma time this morning. She said that Speedy's daughter, Tania, has been with Speedy for the last several days and nights and has been a tremendous help and support during this time. My heart is so saddended by this news, as many of you know, Speedy and I became very close these last few years, and I called him regularly to chat and check on his health. My heart is so heavy today, but the last time I spoke with Speedy, he told me that he is saved, and is going to a better place. We can take comfort in knowing that Speedy is up there, playing his heart out and smiling and singing in heaven! Mary said arrangements are incomplete, but tenative plans for a funeral on Tuesday. I will try to be there. God Bless each of you for your caring and prayers, and please keep Speedy's family (Mary, Opal, Gary (Speedy Jr.) and Tania in your prayers.------------------ Billy Easton Casa Grande, AZ Southwestern Steel Guitar Association

This is truly one of the sadest days ever. Over the years Speedy and Mary have become two of our most cherished friends. Speedy was like a mentor to me, if there is such a thing as a world class steel guitarist being a mentor to a piano player, and for that I will always be very grateful. I have talked to Speedy several times in the past week or so and, bless his heart, he always had a wonderful positive attitude. Mine and Barbara's hearts are very heavy and our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and all of Speedy's family at this truly sad time. He will be thought of and missed every day by those of us who's lives he was so gracious to touch. Go and be with The Lord our friend, we love you. ...Roy and Barbara |
