I just spoke to family this evening. Brad had TWO surgeries today. Apparently, an artery burst after the first surgery and they had to go in and fix that, which they did. He's in Intensive Care right now and will probably be in the hospital for at least a week. I'll check from time to time and keep us all posted. Meanwhile, we'll just keep the prayers and good thoughts and vibes going. Send him a smile. |

From Brad's wife Roberta:Thursday night... Today was an up and down day. Brad remains in the ICU under really great care. His "crit levels" (not sure what kind, but related to blood) were down again this morning. The surgeon decided not to give him any more blood so they could determine what his body was doing on its own. It appears that he has some internal bleeding and they considered doing exploratory surgery tonight. However, the levels at 6pm were the same as at 6am so they are waiting another 12 hours to see if they improve. They feel that the situation is improving, it has just been slow. If the levels are the same or better tomorrow, they think they will move him out of ICU. Other than the bleeding, he is constantly improving and in good Brad-like spirits. We should be getting the pathology report on the cancer tomorrow or maybe Saturday. Hope for good news... Kendra flew to Paris tonight so Darren & I are hanging out with the dogs and eating Easter candy. All your emails, cards, calls, visits, love, positive thoughts and prayers are holding us up. Thank you all. Love, Roberta |

From Roberta this evening:Hello everybody - Brad remains in ICU but today it was because they didn't have a bed for him in TCU. His blood levels remained the same, low but steady. They've decided to leave it "as is" and let him build up his strength. He didn't want visitors too much today and so I think he's getting well enough to realize how tired he really is. I asked him if he was bored and he said no. I can't wait 'til he says yes because then I'll know its still Brad. My adrenaline is wearing off and I'm feeling a bit of the strain. Our weekend should be a quiet one. Thanks to all of you again. Love, Roberta rbechtel@juno.com[This message was edited by Pete Grant on 25 March 2005 at 07:41 PM.] |

Tonight from Roberta:Today was a good day. Brad sat in a chair a couple of times, was able to tolerate some short visits, was looking at a magazine, and was given a few sips of water and one of apple juice. First "food" in 7 days. He is still in ICU but wins the award for the healthiest person there. There were still no beds in the TCU for him. He was unhooked from a fewmonitors and his blood levels remained stable. I expect he'll be in the hospital another 4 days or so. Pathology reports are expected on Tuesday at the latest. Happy & Healthy Easter to all. Love, Roberta rbechtel@juno.com

Little by little. Do keep those prayers and good vibes going. Here's the lastest missive from Roberta:Brad continued to improve today and the Dr has determined that his intestines are just not working well yet (which is why he was backed up and felt so bad). They feel that with some additional time, his system will improve. He will remain in the hospital for a while though because they need to make sure that everything works before they release him. He walked himself to the xray lab today and gets in and out of bed without assistance. The pathology reports came back and the lymph nodes were clear!!! They have staged the cancer at a 2 and we'll find out from the oncologist where he goes from here. I really think he's on his way to health and although its not the way we planned, I am more and more aware that life is not ours to plan. All our best, The Bechtels rbechtel@juno.com |

I just got off the phone with Brad, and he's in very good spirits and quite pleased with all the good wishes and prayers coming his way. I've always known that Brad is a Truly Fine Person, but his positive attitude with a tube in his nose down to the stomach, two IV's and no food for days, is an inspiration. The other day the aroma of coffee wafted down the hall and into his room and his desire for a good cup was rekindled. That will have to wait, though.Brad misses being able to play, but he's been listening to a lot of good music and will often mentally map what he's hearing to his fingerboard. His basic focus is recovery and being able to leave the hospital to be back home. Three cheers for Brad! |

From Roberta this afternoon:Hello everyone: I haven't written in a couple days because there has not been much progress for Brad and therefore no real news. He has lost 23 pounds but they started IV nutrition on Monday night so I hope that some of that will be regained. The Dr's are not sure why his intestinal tract has not regained function quicker and they have taken daily x-rays to check on any progress. He is trying to walk around as much as possible but still gets tired easily. He is in no pain and has not needed medication for pain since Saturday. I think the Drs are trying to decide whether to pull the stomach tube and see what happens but I feel that they are being very cautious. He has been moved to a very quiet spot in the hospital so his sleep is much less interrupted. The care he receives is excellent and he has really had no complaints. I can't say that I could be as saintly. Kendra is due back on Sunday afternoon and we all look forward to the stories she will tell. I'll write again next time there is news. All the best, Roberta rbechtel@juno.com * * * * * * Kendra is their daughter in high school that has been in Paris with her singing group most of the time Brad's been in the hospital. It's good that Brad is in a quieter room now. The other night a lady in his same ICU died, but not before having a room full of doctors and nurses creating a major ruckus in the middle of the night while trying to revive her. Not the kind of thing where you could just say, "Hey, would you keep it down. I'm trying to get some sleep." --Pete |
