I had the pleasure of getting to play in the opening band for Vince Gill last night in south Georgia- Always great to hear him! But the real treat was finding out he had JayDee Maness on this tour leg on steel. JayDee said he and John Hughey have been swapping out dates. He was in fine form and the FOH engineer had his ol' push pull nicely up in the mix. Super fine playing from a great guy, what a treat! JayDee also told me he's just finishing up a Video lesson on his style on E9- so Maness fans might want to keep an eye out for that.

I and a few others had the pleasure of spending most of a day in March with Jay Dee and he not only played with his usual fire but sensitivity that sets him apart from a lot of players. He then had to catch the Red Eye to Florida to play with Vince the next day. It was a day I'll never forget and I too will be waiting for the video when it comes out.

I might also add that in talking to this super picker we found out that he married his high school sweetheart and they have been together for 42 years. That is a milestone that few players can boast about. That says a lot about the man and makes his great talent stand out even more and needless to say, I was more impressed than ever about him.

He must have gotten married really young, I thought he was only about 50.

I used to work with Jay Dee 6 nights a week in S. Ca. at a club called the "Aces" with a singer named Eddy Drake back in the late 60's. Jay Dee is pretty close to my age I'm sure...I'm 59. Jay Dee is not only one of the best steel players ever, but a fine man also. I play piano with Jean Shepard on the Opry, and have been on the Opry most of the last 25 years, so I don't get to see those west coast guys much, but there's some of the best pickers in the world out there! If you want to hear a band, get Jay Dee, Al Bruno on guitar, Archie Frances on drums, and Dale Bennett on bass...very scary! (Dale lives in OK. now)

Jay Dee admits to being 57. He also has every hair he was born with and that makes him look 40. What a guy.

You know, Gary, I'm thinking that would have made him a pretty hairy baby- I KNOW he's a hairy steel player...!
