Well, for all the steelers who moaned (me included) about so little TV coverage on steel guitar, CMT devoted almost half an hour of their two-hour Honky-Tonk music special to the steel's role in Country and Honky-Tonk music! Showing some early footage with steel guitar, as well as a lot of newer Honky-Tonk stuff, they even went as far a tour of Del Mullen's "Factory", and Del explained about the parts and building of a modern pedal steel. Trace Adkins was moderating, and seemed to be a genuine fan of the steel, while explaining all the crying and happy sounds the instrument is capable of. Full songs featured with the steel mentioned were Vince Gill's "Kindly Keep It Country" (special mention of John Hughey's talents), and the Junior Brown song "Highway Patrol" featuring Junior and his "Guit-Steel". You're welcome, Theresa. Like Trace Adkins said, country music wouldn't be as powerful without the steel guitar. The steel guitar was made for country music. It plays a very important part in country music. Del Mullen did an awesome job with making the Mullen pedal steel. If there's any steel player who hasn't seen this show yet, I reccomend it to them. There was a nice clip of a younger Bob Hempker with Loretta Lynn. Was that Gary Hogue with Marty Stewart and Travis Tritt? |

Yes, that was Gary. Its was extra special for me because I now own the very Rhinestone jacket that Larry Marrs was wearing on that Tritt/Stuart performance. Larry is Duanne Marrs son and played in the Marty Suart band for a number of years. He did all the killer high harmonies in back of Marty. I own two Rhinestone jackets from that band. |
