Daniel Lanois is know around the world as a Producer and Guitartist.

If you don't know him check his Discoraphy at http://www.daniellanois.com/

What's VERY interesing is in the NEWS section of his web page, where he talks about his upcoming album, he says,

quote:
"I've also rediscovered my first love: the steel guitar."

All right!!

That's great news. I replaced Danny in Sylvia Tyson's band in '78 before he made his producer trek.

I've felt that way myself on occaision...

there are some great pix in the photos section of the website: of Daniel using his Sho~Bud as a music stand/coffee table;some interesting reference points on his steel neck above the existing fretboard; a front on shot of him at the steel

this is exciting!

I mentioned on a previous thread that a group I was with played on a same venue as Daniel this past summer. He did a solo set on a Sho-Bud thru a Vox AC30 with what I considered to be about the sweetest overdriven sound I've heard. He doesn't use finger picks and he's not playing 'traditional' style steel guitar repertoire. It sounds like what one would play if they just loved what these guitars sound like. I could have listened all night.

I've been aware of DL as a producer for years but it was his sharing the bill with Emmylou on the Sessions at W. 54th program that was a major eye opener. The control of his guitars, the touch, the tone, the extremely personal approach, the musicians around him (bass player Darryl Johnson knocked my socks off! If I ever get more serious about bass I want to be him when I grow up). I have major respect for Lanois. I look forward to hearing what he brings to steel.

As I understand it, Lanois has produced/engineered (?) some work by a fantastic jazz drummer named Brian Blade. Blade's group "Brian Blade Fellowship" features some pedal steel work by a guy named Dave Easley - anybody know him? Is he on the Forum by chance? Very ethereal, atmospheric stuff - and the only real experimental jazz stuff I've heard done on steel.

I'm impressed you know who Dave is.
It's players like this that will carry Steel into the future, IMO.

Respect the past but don't stop progress.

There's an article, that DownBeat rejected, about Dave here.

Yeah, Joey - Dave is blazing a trail that will hopefully open up some things for the instrument.

It's weird because I know the rock/fusion world a lot better than I know country, but I've opened up to country since discovering the great harmonic and sonic possibilties of our beloved steel... I've finally [and thankfully] reached that point where styles don't matter much to me anymore; the only question is "does this music have integrity?" IMO, Lanois/Blade/Easley all represent a very valuable camp of modern music.

Easley is like Greg Leisz on steroids.

I have all the Blades stuff and there are some tunes that feature Dave's really cool approach, some of them pretty much up front. Some very inovative steel playing. YOU WILL NOT HEAR A SINGLE STEEL GUITAR CLICHE IN HIS PLAYING.

Leisz is another one - good call, Larry. And although kd Lang creditied Greg with "singlehandedly liberating steel guitar from the bonds of country music" (or something like that), I think Easley is even less bound by the traditional steel role and sound... They're both great - and worthwhile listening for anyone who's curious about the non-country universe..

Dave Easley is one of the reasons that I took the PSG plunge. If you were ever at any gigs in Nawlins w/ Dave playing, I was usually the nerd standing right in front of Dave watching his feet and knees. I havent seen him around much lately(been staying in a lot!). I know that he was living in Hammond a few years ago and comuted to gigs in the city.

Anyway, he is a super nice guy and is always happy to talk about steel.

By the way, I think he has some kinda home made midi-rig. Wish he would participate in the forum and let us know whazup!

Cool pix! Dan is from my town, and returns on occasion.

Did anyone notice this post is 4 years old?
