Heard Gary last night in Oxford, MS w/ Dierks Bentley. What a show! Five musicians and everybody ('cept the drummer) is showcased continuously. Hats off to Dierks for his appreciation of fine pickers. Gary Morse....What can I say? What a great sound and feel while technically pure. Makes me wish I still had a Sho-bud. James. No question about it, Gary is definately a class act, and one of the best in the business. Another one of the players who certainly help justify the many reasons why many of the pickers are going back to the Ol' Sho-Bud guitars these days. |

I've seen Gary take the gloves off in Nashville at 2:00 A.M. with some monster players. After he got through burning the Sho-Bud down his fingers were lying on the floor. Great Sho-Bud sound and monster player. A class act also. |

I had the great pleasure of working with Gary many times when we were both in S. Florida in "87 to "89. What a great player and a great guy also. I was really spoiled those two years since nearly every job I worked was with Gary or the late, great Gene O'Neal. As for the shaved head, that was a real surprise for me. I remember playing golf with Gary and seeing the pony tail hanging out the golf cap. Shaved head or ponytail, Gary is one of the best steelers you will ever hear. If you ever get the chance to see Gary live, don't miss it. Jim Hartley |

I downloaded Sara Evan's "Suds In The Bucket" from iTunes a little while back and was quite impressed with the steel playing. It didn't sound like Paul, Bruce, Tommy, Sonny, Dan....but is sounded goooood. A nice change. But who was this player? Turns out to be Gary. Cool! Very refreshing. ------------------ |

Re: "Suds in the Bucket" I had to work out that one this week. I didn't know that was Gary, but now that you mention it, it's obvious. It's remaninicent of his "Mooney influenced" work on some of Dwight's songs. Thanks Bill (and Gary) |

Here's a recent photo of the man himself on tour with one of his really great Sho-Bud guitars! This list of artists that Gary has played with is quite impressive. To name a few, Highway 101, Ricky Scaggs, McBride and The Ride, Dwight Yoakam, and most recently, Dierks Bently. Of course, this list is much larger than this. Gary and I have worked together and have been close friends since the late 60's, and he is indeed one of the masters of the steel guitar, and his resophonic (Dobro) playing is absolutely amazing. In fact, he has a CD called "Resophonic Rodeo" that has some of the finest Reso guitar playing I've ever heard, and the songs are ones every steel player can realte to. If you don't have this CD yet, I strongly recommend you get it. You can order them from Bob right here on the Forum. James. Yes it is. It looks like the logo on the new Peavey XXX series amplifiers. In fact, I have those logos on my Peavey steel amps. I think it's pretty cool! I've mentioned this before, but if you haven't heard it, run get a copy of "Tomorrow's Sounds Today" by Dwight Yoakum. Gary's all over this one, playing in quite a few different styles. Truly fine playing, innovative while still soaking in traditional vibe. Between that one and "Resophonic Rodeo", he's definitely become one of my top faves. Fantastic player! ------------------ |

While sharing a room with the bass-player on tour last week, we killed some time watching CMT's top ten. My room-mate was not a great lover of country music, but a discerning musician, nonetheless. We sat through some pretty awful stuff, but ended up with two favourites - AJ's current hit, and 'Suds in the Bucket'. My friend liked them both, because they sounded 'like they were played by a real band!' I know what he meant, and I have to say that I agree with him. I thought I'd read here on the Forum that Sonny Garrish was responsible for the Sara Evans track, so I made a fool of myself reiterating the information. I bought the CD last night, and read that it was Gary - it's a GREAT steel-part!!!! RR |
