Howard R and I were recalling this steel player from the 70's. Howard says: I wonder the same. I think he was Minneapolis-based, and played on some Leo Kottke albums. |

Cal still resides in MPLS. I ran into him at the steel show with John Hughey the attraction. This was in Forest Lake, MN a couple years. I traded in a nice Sho~Bro resonator for a new Dobro D60-Black in 1982 or so as Cal was a dealer. Mike Cass & Cal were popular players in the Twin Cities in that era. He played a single neck Sho~Bud. |

As a new Steeler in the 70's I was impressed with the speed of some players and the finesse of others. Cal's playing on Leo Kottke's "Dreams and All That Stuff", particularly a song called "Why Ask Why" completely turned my head around- he was getting the most beautiful sounds that perfectly fit the songs with very basic pedal movements and stripped-down playing. I remember really re-adjusting my thinking and approach after hearing his simple beautiful style on that album. Just great playing. ------------------ |

Actually, after relistening to this great CD again this weekend, "Twilight Property" is the song I was thinking of with the great steeling... tasty. |
