I recently bought the Robert Earl Keen "Live from Austin, TX" CD which has a lot of great steel in it with Marty Muse behind the wheel. Its a great album to begin with but the steel playing on it makes it even better. For those who want to take a little trip out of the mainstream and/or classic country world, this is something you should listen to. The best way to put it is, "It just sounds good."

Funny, I wanted to write something similar the last weeks. I got the DVD wich is absolutely great. Even if you have the CD - Get the DVD! The duelling between Marty and the guitar player is breathtaking!

That guy was the final straw that made me get a steel, saw him last news years eve, stood right next to him and took mental notes. I had to have the same rig (Old Emmons PP and a Twin Reverb), problem is I haven't put the time in to learn the darn thing, my current band duties are enough of a load, anyway, here's Marty kickin it.

Also met him at the jamboree in Dallas last year and he is the most humble steeler I ever met

Sorry this picture is only half of Marty, but he was kickin it

If you go to the Robert Earl Keen, Jr. web site, www.robertearlkeen.com (choose HTML option), there is a video of the title track of his new album, "What I Really Mean," that shows quite a bit of Marty Muse playing what appears to be an Emmons. (The album is excellent, by the way, and features understated but very nice steel playing by Mr. Muse on quite a few cuts.) Wish REK would visit Connecticut on his current tour!

Thats funny, for some reason, I was almost positive he was playing an Emmons with that incredible sound. I agree with you about that too, wish he'd come to CT, I'm stuck here too. Its nice to know that we have some steelers around though.

Just a bit of trivia (sort of),

Marty bought that guitar from me in the 1980s and has been playing it ever since. I got the guitar from Rick Price, who (if I remember correctly) got it from Tiny Olsen and before that I don't know who owned it.

The weird thing about the steel is that there are three rows of holes on the end plate. I asked Ron Lashley about that and he couldn't remember for sure but he thought that maybe that guitar had originally belonged to Weldon Myrick and the third row of holes was for a split tuning capability.

I have a Chet Atkins album called, "Hometown Guitar" on which Weldon played. On the back there is a picture from the session and Weldon is sitting behind an Emmons with threee rows of holes on the end plate. It might be Marty's guitar but I don't know for sure. I need to ask Mr. Myrick whether he remembers the serial number from that steel.

Marty makes that Emmons sound great!

Best,

Jim

I got to meet Marty several years ago at Billy Bobs. What a super nice fella. Since I is an Aggie as well, I even got to meet REK.

And if you can't get enough, check out Lloyd Maines tearing it up on REK's "Live No. 2" album.
