Drew, On Dylan's 2004 tour he had Larry Campbell on pedal steel. His current lineup for his touring band has BR5-49 member Don Herron on Pedal Steel and Fiddle. Cheers! ------------------ |

Nice steel, but holy cow! What happened to Dylan's voice??? Was he just hoarse or does he always sound like that now? With a voice like that, at least there will be lots of steel solos. He makes Joe Cocker sound like Pavarotti by comparison. |

Are you sure Don is playing PEDAL steel with Dylan? He's always been a no-pedal guy with BR549, though I know he bought a pedal steel to fool around with... |

Pete - Not sure of Don Herron is playing pedal, but I will let you know soon....I am going to see Dylan and Haggard in Chicago on Sunday night. Dylan is touring with another fiddle player, Elana Fremerman, from Hot Club of Cowtown. I will post a review of the show when I get back! Dylans Voice - Yeah, it has seen better days. I have seen Dylan the past couple times he has come through Chicago and he is not singing too hot these days. In fact, he doesn't even play guitar anymore. He just sits at a piano and blows harp. Yes, I just saw Dylan here in Oakland, and Don IS playing Pedal steel with him. He switches over to lapsteel for stuff like "Highway 61 Revisited", but he really is an excllent PS'er, and there's another thread on this forum "Dylan with pedal steel & twin fiddles" with more detail on Don Herron. He seems to have it together enough to have made it the primary instrument he uses with this band. |

Wow! Actually I'm digging his voice on You Win Again...sort of like Tom Waits singing country. It sounds kinda painful......sort of in a good way....oh well, you gotta be a Dylan fan! |

Listen to "Lonesome Day Blues" or "Sugar Baby" off Zimmy's latest studio-album -- and tell me that his shot-through voice doesn't fit those tunes perfectly! Well, that's just my opinion, at least -- your mileage may vary. |

I would call it "soulful" on Pancho & Lefty. For my money, it's a little too real on You Win Again... It's kinda like having Hank Williams actually die on you... Where does the art stop and the tragedy begin? Ah--whatever... A couple of years ago I saw a singer/songwritter guy named Ryan Adams in Chicago and Bucky Baxter was playing steel for him. That was probably 2002 or 2003. Cheers! ------------------ |

I saw Dylan a couple of years ago with Larry Campbell playing steel. He sounded great, Dylan's music is a great vehicle for steel, IMO. I love playing steel on Dylan tunes. I think Bob has been a great promoter of steel in a largely steel-less music culture for a long time. He seems to genuinely love country and blues music. Hear, hear. To answer the question about what Bucky Baxter's doing these days, he founded Three Trees Music, a studio in Nashville. Some friends just finished recording an album there. On Dylan's voice, Ole' Bob hardly needs anyone's approval. I suppose it's an acquired taste, but then so is old wine or cheese. I acquired the taste for all 3 a long time ago. |

All, Well I went to the Dylan show in Chicago last night. This guy, Amos Lee, opened the show up...pretty good young guy. Then Merle took the stage. They put on a great show and Norm Hamlet was awesome! Dylan was up next. He played for around 90 minutes. I am a huge Dylan fan and hate to say this, but his voice is just awful. The first 3-4 songs were just un-intelligible. His voice is so gravely that you can't understand one word he says. He stood at his keyboard and barely played it. He did play a ton of material from the Love/Theft and Time out of Mind albums, but did go back and play some classics (A Hard Rain's gonna fall, I shall be released, You Ain't Going No Where, Hwy 61 Revisited, The Times They are a changing). Don Herron did play Pedal, Non-pedal, Mando and Banjo. He did have 2 fiddles on stage with him, but did not pick them up. From where I was sitting I couldn't tell what kind of guitars he had, but it was a D-10 Pedal and a D-8 non-pedal. It also looked like he was playing through 2 Matchless amps. This band line-up is a HUGE change to the Dylan tours of the past that I have seen. They are a loud country-rock band now! Other than Dylan's voice being totally shot, it was a pretty good show. No, Bucky joined Dylan long after "The Rolling Thunder Review". I think it was a guy named David Mansfield on that tour; don't know much about him but he was a multi-instrumentalist who played pedal steel on some tunes. There's a "Live 75" CD of that tour but I don't have a copy handy to check the musicians info... |

I worked with Larry during his formative years. . . . (As a sound man) With The John Herald Band. He was a great fiddle player & PSG player! Then I saw him in 2002 with B.D. . . . And he was resting on his laurels ! I am curious as to what he is up to now!? ------------------ |

I saw Bucky Baxter with Dylan at Madison Sq. Garden back around 2001, with Joni Mitchell and Dave Alvin, the same year he played with Steve Forbert and then saw him with Ryan Adams at SXSW in Austin. I also got a solo Album from Bucky that was real good. ------------------ |

Well I sure hope ol' Bob gets some throat spray or hot lemon & honey before May 26. He's coming to the Ft Lauderdale Stadium along with Willie Nelson - and I just got 2 tickets.  But what the heck, as long as there's some good steel playing in there somewhere . . |
(I say that as a fan...) But if you want to hear one of the most innovative, creative, (insert plaudit here) song-writers of the rock generation, Dylan's the guy, even nowadays.
