Just got Vince Gill's new box set.
Great job by some of Nashville's
finest steel players.

Darn it! I was just in there today and I looked but they didn't have it.

I didn't know 'E' was on it - that decides it for me. I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks, Rick.

It's a 4-disc set of all new material for $24 -- an incredible value!

Way to go Vinny!

I picked it up yesterday-haven't gotten too far into it yet, but I've listened to the majority of the "country" disc, and that one will make a lot of members here happy.

Pretty much straight ahead country with steel on about every song.

I've been a big Vince guy for years, but I questioned his ability to be able to come up with 43 good songs in a couple year span to warrant an album like this-but I have to say, so far/so good.

It's on sale at Target for $19.99. Quick glance at the credits--Paul on 11 tunes, Buddy on 6 and John on 2... Nice job

4 VG CD's for around $20, most CD's ar pushing $19 for one.

I am listening to it as I sit here, CD 3 with Buddy and John, straight ahead Vince with a great harmony vocalist and steel.

For those of you who thought country was dead IT'S NOT. Vince is the real deal.

Perhaps the best part of Vinces project( aside from the superb musicanship) is that we will not have to have the usual Forum cat fight about whether the record is too country, too rock, too acoustic. There is a full disc of each as well as some pop jazz tracks. In this way everyone has ten or eleven reasons to enjoy Vince's explorations in each idiom...I am going out on a limb here but Charley Cushman plays some great straight Scruggs style banjo on the bluegrass number, "All Prayed Up". Also the fiddle player(Michael Cleveland) on that track is blind since birth!...Charlie informed me that Michael played past the end of his fiddle break because he couldnt see the rest of the band but they picked up on it perfectly!
This set is really worth every dollar....Peter

Theresa-it's in my car, so I can't tell you about all the steel tracks right off-but Vince and his people did a beautiful job of packaging.

In the little book, unlike on a lot of albums where the players are listed in general, but that's as much as you get on the details-each player and singer is listed for that particular song, along with the lyrics.

If you're asking the question because you might want to download your favorites off the album from i-tunes or whatever, just go out and buy the thing-at $20 on sale at Target, it's the best music value I've come across in many years-and it's probably a lot cheaper that way than downloading songs.

Thanks Mark,
I don't download, I might buy it. I was just wondering if steel was only on the country cd and if the steel is out front in the mix?

Theresa, there is some occasional steel on the other discs(except the bluegrass record) but not as upfront as on the country one. I hate to start a fire storm here but I wish they had cranked up the steel in the country mix a little more....perhaps if they had equed the steel a little differently it would be more audially apparent. Having said that you can still hear every note and my ears do not perceive the treble as well as they used to. This is really just nit picking: it is a an outstanding effort by Vince and Paul and everyone who played on there...Peter

Some fine players, who consitently play great music.
I'll have to order it.

The review in the Bangkok Post was glowing,
and had pics with the Del McCory band,
one of my favorites.
Should be a great listen, for a long time.

I went to Target to pick up the CD and they were ALL SOLD OUT!! Bummer!

However, they gave me a rain check, I took it to Wally World and they matched the $19.99 price and beat it by 2 cents, $19.97.

What a deal!

Theresa, I didn't want you to think that the album was in my car the other day, but I was too lazy to walk outside to look at the little book that came with it-my wife had taken that car on a Costco run (those can be very costly).

Here is how it breaks down overall, by numbers of tracks that contain steel. Theresa's bro is the most often used:

Steel:

Paul Franklin-10
Buddy Emmons-6
John Hughey-2

Dobro:

Jerry Douglas-2
Paul Franklin-1

All 10 of the songs on the Country & Western disc contain steel.

My favorite lyric, from "Take This Country Back," a duet with John Anderson:

"We got to take this country back
We need a few more matchin' Nudie suits
and silver dollar Cadillacs
When we all gather up in Heaven, how we
gonna face the man in black
We got to take this country back"

or earlier in the song:

"There's one too many dime store cowboys
muscled up in a cowboy hat
We got to take this country back"

You go Vince!

And as far as the steel being up front in the mix-it it may not be as up front as on a specialty steel guitar record, but it's there, and you can hear it with no problem at all.

From the liner notes:

"In one sense, Eric Clapton inspired Gill to follow his creative impulses. In 2004, Clapton called to invite him to participate in Clapton's Crossroards
Guitar Festival, a one-time gathering of master guitarists in Dallas. When he phoned, Clapton told Gill he was only inviting people whose work he admired. Gill follows a similar approach here, making musical artistry his yardstick. "I'm not ever trying to fill up my records with famous people," he says. I try to fill 'em up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth. I feel like every time you try to make something better than it could be, you're doing your job."

As written in my post prior to the more recent one:

"In the little book, unlike on a lot of albums where the players are listed in general, but that's as much as you get on the details-each player and singer is listed for that particular song, along with the lyrics."

It's all there, if you buy the album.

The third CD in the set is worth the price of the whole thing. Buddy, Paul & John playing some great licks/runs. I especially like BE's intro on the first song.

Well, you guys didn't expect me to list all the song titles, with the steel player on each track, did ya? (too much work)

Because without having the the album, it wouldn't mean anything to you any way!

Mark, I did buy the album ... legitimately, by download from puretracks.com, the only licensed provider we can use in Canada, as far as I can determine. However, as convenient as that method is, there's typically no album info other than the song title and artist.

but I didn't have to go out to get it

Don-when I have some time in the next couple of days, I'll be happy to list out the steelers by track (if someone doesn't beat me to it).

Now this album was such a bargain (I would think even in Canadian dollars! ) that you must have "gone into the red" by downloading it instead of buying the album at a retailer, unless the downloads themselves were heavily discounted.

This is a great album. It was especially gratifying to hear two songs from my friend Pete Wasner (who also played multiple keyboards on the release).

Vince is one of my favorite pop/rock guitarists in the Larry Carlton vein. He totally rocks on this album.

Tom Britt also plays some amazing slide on this. Tom is one of my favorite slide players.

The steel playing is universally great on this release, as well.

Here you go Don, and any other "downloaders:"

Disc One "Workin' On A Big Chill/The Rockin' Record"

3. Cowboy Up/Paul-dobro
4. Sweet Thing/Paul-steel
6. Nothin' for a Broken Heart/Paul-steel
9. The Rhythm of the Pouring Rain/Paul-steel

Disc 2 "The Reason Why/The Groovy Record"

1. What You Don't Say/Paul-steel
2. The Reason Why/John-steel
3. The Rock of Your Love/Paul-steel
10.Tell Me One More Time About Jesus/Paul-steel

Disc 3 "Some Things Never Get Old/The Country & Western record"

1. This New Heartache/Buddy-steel
2. The Only Love/Buddy-steel
3. Out of My Mind/Buddy-steel
4. The Sight of Me Without You/John-steel
5. I Can't Let Go/Buddy-steel
6. Don't Pretend With Me/Buddy-steel
7. Some Things Never Get Old/Paul-steel
8. Sweet Little Corrina/Paul-steel
9. If I Can Make Mississippi/Paul-steel
10.Take This Country Back/Buddy-steel

Disc 4 "Little Brother: The Acoustic Record"

3. A River Like You/Jerry-dobro
5. Molly Brown/Vince-resonator (I don't know if this refers to something like a round neck National-I have to listen to it again).
6. Girl/Jerry-dobro

I guess I was off by one on my original count in an earlier post-I had Paul on one song too many. Hey-there's probably more mistakes to be found-I was getting a little blurry-eyed going back and forth between the booklet and my keyboard.
