For the last few days I have been having a problem receiving steelradio.com. When I go to Scotty's home page, and click on the "On Air" button, the following window pops up: Windows cannot open this file: listen-21.pls To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer. What do you want to do?
1. Use the web service to find the appropriate program. OR
2. Select the progarm from a list

I can still access the webcast from Real Player, where it is still showing as the last thing I listened to there. But I am curious what has caused this, and how it can be remedied. Anyone's help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
MIke Weaver

The file type ".pls" needs to be associated with RealPlayer. Use option 2 to pick RealPlayer from the list of programs on your computer.

I take it that this means that people who refuse to install Real Player on their computer cannot listen to SteelRadio?

I for one refuse to install RP.

I didn't know RP would even work with Steel
Radio. I don't have RP installed either.

I have Music Match Jukebox that will work with Steel Radio and at one time had WinAmp installed and it will work with Steel Radio.

However I"ve got that same message when clicking on the link on Scotty's web site. It appears when it happens either the server is down or there is a link problem. They seem to change the URL on the server a lot and that may be one reason for the error.

So then, Wiz, how do you listen to RA files?

Michael, I’m sorry that you and all the others are having problems receiving our broadcast. Personally, I have never been able to get our station to run on Real Player. We transmit using WinAmp with special broadcasting software. I have found it better to tune in using the same player. I’m sure there are those who would disagree, but I find WinAmp to be easier to use. I listen to the broadcast like everyone else while working at Scotty’s and I was connected yesterday for over 2,800 minutes without interruption. I use WinAmp v.5 to monitor and WinAmp v2.80 on our laptop...as well as MusicMatch (sometimes). I just checked all the servers and everything is running at peak efficiency. We have not changed our address in six months and the new port is working great.

In an attempt to help get you going, try installing WinAmp and editing your "Bookmark" to read http://steelradio.serverroom.us:8300/ . Or you can copy & paste, or type this into the "Play URL" of WinAmp. If it still does not connect, add listen.pls (http://steelradio.serverroom.us:8300/listen.pls). If you’re using a dial up connection you might experience some buffering. We are broadcasting at 24kpbs to help our dial up listeners. The higher the quality the more bandwidth is needed and this creates problems for the dial up. We know that 24kpbs is not great for recording, but we want to promote the player’s CDs.

I hope this helps getting you connected, please let me know if you still have problems.

Thank you, all for your answers. I did what b0o suggested, and all is fine once again using Real Player.

Donny asked me:

The simple answer is I don't listen to any .ra files, or anything else that requires Real Networks software. If it isn't playable with Windows Media player I don't download it. I don't have Quicktime on any of my computers either.

I am saddened by the fact that SteelRadio files are not playable in Windows Media Player, which ships free with every version of Windows since 3.1.

The above link is to "Real Alternative", which is just that--a way to play Realmedia files without using the dreaded Real Player.

If I recall, it uses Realmedia codecs with Media Player Classic as the player.

It's a free download.

There is a Quicktime Alternative at the same site.

Thanks Mitch! It's good to have alternatives, especially free ones. Hopefully they aren't bundled with spyware or adware.

Works like a charm! Thanks for the link! I am now listening to SteelRadio using the free "Media Player Classic" with only Quicktime and Realmedia Codecs installed. And, no spyware was installed with it.
