Forumite John McGann and I have a new book just published: Joaquin Murphey, Classic Western Swing Steel Guitar Solos. John has transcribed 18 of Joaquin's best improvised solos (w/ chord progressions) from currently available CDs or available to download courtesy of Herb Steiner at www.herbsteiner.com. The book is professionally printed and features my essay on Joaquin's life, archival photos, info on Joaquin's steel tunings, a discography, and tips for playing the music. The transcriptions - in standard notation and tab - are designed to be accessible for both pedal and non-pedal C6th steel guitar and Dobro. Most of the music could be played on a 6th string lap steel. Pedal steel players will simply consider their 2nd string the highest string when reading and playing the tab. The Solos: Spadella List price is 19.95 but we're offering a Forum special of $15 including USPS Media Mail shipping to the USA. paypal to: john@johnmcgann.com. Checks to: PO Box 688 Jamaica Plain, Ma. 02130-0006 USA [This message was edited by Andy Volk on 31 August 2004 at 07:44 AM.] |

Andy, would you post John's address for those of us who would like to send a check? You're doing a lot of great things to promote steel guitar. It's much appreciated. |

Gentlemen - Looks great - just placed my order. As a long time sax player and admirer of Charlie Parker, I think it is fair to compare Murphey with Bird - true innovators, with confident melodic and harmonic and rhythmic fluidity in their improvised lines. Looking forward. Thanks! - Bob |

Man, this is a great book! It's wonderful to have so many transciptions in one place, you start to see some of Joaquin's "boxes" or thought patterns. Thanks so much for doing this. Joaquino fans, get on the boat! ------------------ |

I should add a big thank you to Herb Steiner for sharing these spectacular cuts and for helping keep Joaquin's legacy alive. Herb's comments were very helpful in preparing our book as well. Many thanks Herb, and congratulations on your recent award. |

Nice of you to offer a special deal for Forum members (on an already super-affordable book). This website just keeps on giving. So that's $17 USD for a Canadian order? Is that only available through PayPal, or can I send a money order/cheque? |

Andy, thanks! Guys, I just got John and Andy's book and it is a beautifully done piece of work. Murph would be proud. The credit for Murph's re-emergence and his legacy living on belongs to Chas Smith and Michael Johnstone. I was fortunate to become Murph's friend in the last year or so of his life because of Michael. I had Joaquin's phone number for a while, but didn't want to intrude on him since Chas had told me what a bitter recluse he'd become. Michael told me just the opposite and suggested I call him. Murph must have had a change of heart, because on our first phone conversation, he yakked my ear off for 45 minutes. That was the start of some great conversations. I helped him out with some much needed money, then went out to LA for other business and MJ arranged a meeting with the Man. We hung out in the studio, listening to the tapes of his new album and generally schmoozing steel guitar. His autographed photo is hanging in a place of honor in my home. I also have one of his bars; again, thanks to Michael Johnstone. Michael is helping me with information on another great steel player of the past deserving of recognition. MJ wears a white hat, IMHO. As do John McGann and Andy Volk. Support these men in their work, guys. ------------------ |

Herb, many thanks for the endorsement. I am very happy to be working with Andy, he is a great guy and excellent artist. We are planning to continue with more books in this vein, as long as we can break even! It is a great thing that Mr. Murphey connected with fellow players after what sounded like a long period of disconnect. Michael and Chas, Herb and other folks who helped him...I don't know what to say that doesn't sound too squishy, but that is really "walking the walk" of plain good ol' human kindness. Right on, right on!!! ------------------ |

Er...um...well...uh...yes. Sorry for my above poorly-worded post, guys. Above post has been edited to (hopefully) be a little clearer. Anyhow, yeah -- what John & Andy said. Y'all have about 13 hours & 39 minutes left to get this book at the special price; after that time, it will still be available, at the regular price. |
