In my mission to help get more steel players up and running, I have a thorough E9 curriculum designed to teach the basics and get you ready for the bandstand, which is hopefully your goal. We can also work on material YOU want or need to learn (many students already playing out or jamming find this option helpful). I've been playing 32 years, teaching for 10. Classes are normally evenings at my home studio in San Pedro, near Torrance and Long Beach.

For more info, just click "Send Email" in this post, and I'll get a very detailed PDF to you.

Hey there L.A.'ers. I hooked up with John, and he has a well organised, methodical approach to teaching the steel guitar.
I've tried taking lessons from hotshot steelers that could play circles around me(not hard to do, actually), but they didn't have the METHOD to teach, and therefore couldn't be as effective for me.
If you want to get to the next level, McClung's your man!

If you're 2005 resolution is to finally take some lessons and get clear on...chords, scales, ways to approach improvising, better technique, or...whatever!...drop me a line, many dates in January are available.

Thanks for the eloquent endorsement, Jordan! Watch for this guy on the road one day very soon, gang, he's got great talent for the pedal steel, I predict he'll go far.

Plus he has great tattoos!

I just had my first pedal steel lesson with John McClung in response to this add. I highly recommend John as a teacher. He has an extremely well thought out and organized lesson plan. And it is at a very great value I might add. Lots of bang for your buck.

I've been studying steel with John a.k.a. "Professor Twang" for over a year and in addition to being an outstanding, inspiring player, John is an excellent, thorough, and extremely dedicated teacher and all around great guy. The lessons are always a lot of fun but John never lets you off easy! He pushes you to succeed and inspires you to make your steel guitar dreams and ambitions a reality. He's the greatest!

Chris, thanks for the very kind compliments, hope you're feeling better by now and ready to come in for more inspiration.

Still have openings for new students, and will teach weeknights and weekend afternoons to make life easier.

Howdy back, CAB!

Nice blurb on your lessons, Chris. Folks, Chris is a fabulous musician, songwriter, singer, and I have no doubt he's a great teacher of psg as well. It's nice, and unusual, to have two sources for good live lessons in the Los Angeles area, we're finding an unexpected number of new players out here needing personalized instruction, and it's great being able to help newcomers out.

If you've followed the Pedal Steel thread started by Winnie Winston regarding relying on tab vs. learning to speak the language of music: that's exactly my teaching philosophy. You will learn a few licks with me, but mainly you'll learn how to understand what you're hearing, and how to quickly find and play that on your E9.

John is dragging me - kicking and screaming - into the world of PSG. And...it's working. Actually, the only kicking and screaming I do is in the privacy of my practice room. He's a great teacher - incredibly patient, understanding, challenging, and incredibly knowlegeable. He's got teriffic teaching materials, too. I'mm glad that I can present him with my own challenge: teaching a left-handed player how to play - left handed! "Wait! What're you doing with your left hand there?! Oh - yeah - picking...!"

Too funny, Paul! It really IS hard to tell if you're on the right fret when everything is backwards, sheesh. I should just watch you in the wall mirror, I guess.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone, glad you're informed and challenged by my lessons.

Yep, I've known John for many years ,over 25, and he really is a great, caring teacher .The only trouble is, my psychiatrist thinks I'm crazy for trying to learn pedal steel , my doctor says I need heart medication from the stress, and my chiropractor says I've really messed up my back carrying the darn thing .Anyway , John IS a great teacher...I should have stayed with the harmonica !

Hey John. It's time to make that instructional video(s). You're an outstanding player and teacher and I would love to see you out there with the other great players. Your style of playing is certainly a step above and your willingness to share that with us is a great contribution to the steel guitar world.

Bill, thanks for the compliments and encouragement! Video might be a possibility, probably write a textbook before that, after years of teaching my lesson plans already are a good foundation to write one.

Btw, I know two new licks, you better come in for a lesson!

John,
Thanks so much for giving me John Clarke's number again. It was a great help...! We have lined up some lessons already. It takes effort to be kind and you certainly have achieved that status.

Thanks Again, Terry Hickey

And for you folks needing lessons in the San Diego, CA area, I always recommend Jim Palenscar in Oceanside. stlgtr@sbcglobal.net. He has a wonderful, brand new steel guitar store and does repair/mod work.

I have a couple of good student model steels available, in case you don't already have a steel guitar lined up. Also pro models, S-10, SD-10, S-12 and D-10 available. Drop me a line for details.
