Jack --
I remember Jerry saying (Winchester, Joliet or Hawaii) I don't remember, that he recorded "Drowsy Waters" and the flip side was "Steelin' the Blues" on Mercury Records.
I think he said that this was his very first recording with Mercury and when he was going into the Studio he had no idea what he was going to record. Remarkable !!
Am I correct on this subject, or is my memory failing again?
By the way, that whole Album, Hi-Fi Guitar is excellent--"La Golendrina" & "La Paloma"
are my favorites.

Hi Jack,
The Hi-Fi Guitar Album by Jerry is all good, particularly "La Golondrina". That as well as "La Paloma" were two of my favorites as a kid.

Sometime ago Jerry was telling a group of us that when he first recorded with Mercury, he recorded "Steelin' the Blues" and on the flip side "Drowsy Waters". Also that when he was going into the studio he had no idea what he wanted to record -- remarkable! Am I correct in this or was my hearing as bad then as my memory is today.
Appreciate your comments.

Warren,

If my discography is correct and I think it is Jerry's first recording with Mercury was Beyond the Reef backed by Pagan Love Song (5531) and Drowsy Waters/Steelin The Blues was second(6175). I am not famliar with the circumstances you related about the recording but it doesn't surprise me. A lot of his recordings were off the cuff I think. One time I was visiting in Nashville and we got up very early one morning to go to the studio for a TV show. He was the musical director of the show and as were were going down the highway he had a pad of paper taped on the dashboard and writing on it. I asked him just what he was doing. He siad I am putting the show together. I asked how do the musicians and cameramen know what is coming as we were up against it for time and knew they were not going to have time to rehearse anything. He told me all I do is tell them the lineup and we just do it. He said everyong has heard these songs and done them a million times and we all know what the other will be doing as well as the camermen. I then asked how he knew the timing of the songs to fill the whole show. He said oh we just watch the control room and when they indicate we need to cut or strech a certain number we just do it. So I guess he could very well go into a recording studio under the same conditions as you describe.

By the way one thing Jerry was planning to do before his health turned sour recently was re-master HI FI Guitar. I think he will eventually get to it. He is not completely happy with the mix on the recording and wants to get it to his liking.

HHope this helps on your question.

When Jerry and I were both growing up in Ohio. He was 17 and I was only 15 at the time.
The songs La Golondrina (the Swallow) La Paloma(the Dove), and Estralita were popular steel solos that we played in the late 30"s.

A6 and C# minor was two tunings I used a lot on my 6 string Supro those days.

I am so glad that Jerry got all these tunes on Record, which he did so Beautifully.

I am praying for his good health and remembering the old days when I played at the Congress Cafe in Lima , Ohio...Memories of long ago...al
