One of the greatest sacred steel players, Calvin Cooke, will be playing in Philly on Saturday, 9/23, at the Sedgwick Cultural Center, which is at 7137 Germantown Avenue, in the Mt. Airy section of (NW) Philadelphia. Philly has been a main focal point for a lot of sacred steel and we expect a big, sellout crowd for this show. If you heard Lonnie Bennett at ISGC, you have some idea of what's about to happen here; Lonnie describes Calvin as his mentor! Bob Stone and Dan Tyack (who lives in Seattle!) are both flying in for the event, so that tells ya something too!
If you've ever thought about listening to this unique music on steel guitar, this is your chance. Call the theater to reserve your seats at 215-248-9229. Let me know if you're coming and need driving directions, accomodations, or whatever. See you there!
(p.s. I just heard that Lonnie and his wife are flying in for the show too!)

Calvin is amazing, easily as influencial as Buddy Emmons in the Sacred Steel tradition. And he sings better than both Buddy and Dave Van Allen.

Chuck Campbell and Robert Randolph will be there too--Calvin was a big influence on both of them. Calvin really knocked 'em out at the National Folk Festival in East Lansing, MI last month.

By the way, we'll present a sneak preview of the Arhoolie Foundation's Sacred Steel documentary video at the Sedgwick Friday night 9/22 at 8 pm. I'll also give a brief talk and slide show on the tradition, which will emphasize the Philadelphia connection.
Admission is free. Thanks for helping make all this happen, Jim.

The official "world premier" of the video will be at the Pacific Film Archives in Berkeley, CA on 10/18. The video will be released for sale at that time. I'll keep you posted.

Just got a phone call from Chuck Campbell. Both he and his brother, Darick (aka The Campbell Brothers), will be here for this show. This is gonna be amazing. If you're anywhere within a 5-state radius of Philly, you really ought to come be part of this. Heck, I'm up for it... and I'm JEWISH!

Jim,

Word has it that a whole bunch of sacred steelers from Philly and New Jersey will be there. Tradition founder Willie Eason's wife, Jeannette, has contacted several members of the extended Eason family who will be attending Fri. and Sat.

These are exciting times!

See you soon.

Bob

Calvin really Cooked! (all puns intended, but it's true!)

Two Mellobars, a Fender Stringmaster single 8 and an MSA classic S-10...

a really fine band.

And the Spirit was in the house...

All times are Pacific (US)
