Hi group: Rodney Crowell and Jerry Jeff Walker are appearing Friday night, 7/27/01, at the Britt Festivals in Jacksonville, Oregon. Do either of these singers use a steel player in their band? If so, do you know their names? Maybe I'll see you down there. ------------------ |

Hi SGF: I went to the concert Friday night and neither singer had a steel guitarist in their bands. Here's my short review: Of the two I belive that a steel would fit well with Jerry Jeff Walker's group and sound. His performance was interesting because he has a very good country voice yet his music is overlayed with a strong rock distortion lead guitar sound. This was an odd juxtaposition for me and in my mind while listening to Walker, I could visualize a steel on ALL his songs. With Rodney Crowell it was different. His band included two lead guitarists and I could only visulize a steel guitar on A FEW of his songs. I guess I see less country in Crowell than I do in Walker. Actually, this is the first time I have seen either performer live (I don't recall seeing them on TV either but I'm sure they've been there) and I was really not familar with either of their singing styles. I went away from the concert as a new convert to Walker's singing. He certainly brought the audience to life throughout his performance and his voice has a real sense of country realism in it. I am a big fan of Rodney Crowell's songwriting and I guess I am interested in his songwriting rather than his musical style. If you remember, his DIAMONDS AND DIRT album back in the early '90's went gold or platinum and it had great steel guitar on it. His latest, THE HOUSTON KID is more about his life growing up, and there is hardly any steel on it at all. Check this out. It's a great CD, if you're into his music. |

Jerry Jeff has used steel in nearly all his recordings and continues to do so. He may not carry a steel in his road band as of late. Our own Herb Steiner played on his early recordings and on the road, and Lloyd Maines played in his road band in the mid 80' and early 90's and occasionally still does dates with him. JJ has recently been trying new guitar players since the great John Inman left. But his sound is typical of the Texas Country sound which is heavy guitar influenced. That's what I love about playing Texas Music is that I get to play rockin' steel. Also, Houston Kid is a fabulous album. Steel or no steel (IMHO). |
