I hate to say it but I have to go along with Al on this one.. I loved sitting at the bar at Latellas and spending the afternoon having a couple of cold ones listening to some terrific steel. I'll probably pass on this one and catch the next show in Connecticut. This one is now a little further than i'm willing to travel for a day trip. Good point guys!!!!!! There also used to be two prices of admission; one for singles and one for couples. Now it's going to resemble a movie theater. Not to mention that "TICKETMASATER??" is involved. Please go back to Latella's. I didn't mind the three hour drive. I'll just put Teddy Lloyd in the trunk next time. (JUST KIDDING TEDDY!!!!)

Boo, can you name any other steel shows that are within a 2 hour driving radios of my nations capitol where we can hear accomplished players like White, Rugg, Auldrige, Wallace, etc.? The Steelin for Hearts Jam has outgrown Latella's, even with us local players participating like it did from the get go. Furthermore, many perks come with the Birchmere like a quality PA, an environment with wonderful acoustics and lots of BTU's to keep my rear end cool and keep my body sweat under control even though I'm not playing this year. If you were privy to the performa for this event, I feel you wouldn't complain about the price tag to get in. Anyway, I like the idea of us local pickers getting together once in a while to jam, even though you all smoke me. Why don't you organize something and I'll be there! thanks for your support on this one guys!!!! this has gotten out of hand!! and no gary i cant tell you were you can hear these calibar players with in a two hour drive but i can tell you that scottie has a wonderful venue every year for these guys to strutt there stuff and if i were a bettin man i bet there not being paid for it.i could be wrong but..... and as for the change in venue why have we outgrown latellas that place is large enough for any kind of function of this type. is it to much of a dive for these people now that NASHVILLE PLAYERS are hired? i never heard charelton or wallace complain about tone or not enogh room come on man this is a mistake and further more it has nothing to do with me not being on the show hell i wanna see joann rich and howard whittington and all of buddys students get to play like we got to play when it was a STEEL JAM not a damn concert you have to pay $25.00 to get in and then not get to mill around cause im sure theses cats will hold to there self in the back room . and as for putting something together it already underway i will let you know as soon as i work out some more details maby even as soon as mid summer . One reason why the jam has outgrown Latella's is the lack of parking and the fire marshall breathing down on the powers to be. A liability issue could bankrupt the principle(s) of this event including the lease holder of Latella's. If you are interested in a hypothetical scenario, email me. Gary Lee |

I'm not sure I really know what the beef is here. This thing could wind up raising a lot MORE money for the cause. So, that's a GOOD thing, right? I understand the loss of the local players being able to get together, etc., but this seems like a nice event that's being put together - one that I'd be very happy to be having right in my backyard. But, that's just me. |

I don't know the finances of either location, but I'd support whichever raises the most money for the Johns Hopkins heart transplant unit. Bottom line: it's a matter of life and death. |

sheesh... try and do something nice... Boo; Let me get this straight up front: I am a volunteer. I am not privvy and never have been privvy to the financial arrangements with any "name players" at any of the Jams previous locations: Wheaton VFW, Crossroads, Latelas. You should take up your issues (and it appears you have many) with Dean Black . As to my being on the bill this year: Dean has told me that after he had gotten firm committments from so many NAME PLAYERS for the event, that he had to PULL NAMES FROM A HAT to make the decision as to who of the "regional pickers" would play in the limited time left. Luck of the draw. I "lucked out"...lucky me, I "get to" expose my playing to the scrutiny of a room full of pickers, many of whom are legends, (and many who are not ) most of whom can play rings around me (yourself included)... excuse me, I digress. Me, personally, I have volunteered my playing, my time for event set up and tear down, hauling PA, and pitching in for promotion for 12 of the last 13 public jams (the last 9 of which I've lived out of the area. ) The only year I missed was the year my father died four years ago April 1st , and I had a 6 month old son and a wife with a broken leg to take care of. But if my name had not been chosen for this year, I would still be driving 4 hours one way to attend, volunteering to help where I could and promoting the event, as well as Paying My $25 to see a remarkable show with several Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame members, many who should or will be, and several of the best bands and musicians in the area and benefit a good cause. As to others who may have been "doing this long before (me) and Dean"... Before this became the organized benefit jam, it indeed was indeed a "circle of local pickers" sitting around staring at each other at Sonny's house. I was there, Dean, Sonny, Mike and Tommy Auldrige...a few others maybe; I don't remember you being there. I attended the FIRST public jam at Wheaton VFW. I showed up to listen and got told as I arrived "you're on next" and pulled a pickup band from the audience and played a half hour set, seat of my pants, spur of the moment; I don't remember you being there. Each year after Sonny died Dean has In My Opinion selflessly worked his ass off to organize and pull off a BENEFIT SHOW, dealing with a selfish bunch of cantankerous honkytonkers and hillbilly primadonnas... in short, a thankless task; yet every year there has been a great show, and $$ at the end for the Johns Hopkins Heart folks. Due to the efforts not only of Dean, but of a troupe of VOLUNTEERS who return year upon year. And it has gotten bigger every year to the point that Dean, the primary organizer of the event , felt it was necessary to move the venue. He can explain better than I why we are not at Latelas this year. I like Latelas- nothing I like better than a smokey honky tonk. But I was told LATELAS IS NOT AVAILABLE. The Birchmere is one of the premiere listening venues in the UNITED STATES, not just the area, for roots, country & American music. It's an opportunity to expose the steel guitar and several of it's finest players to an audience beyond the dyed in the wool steel guitar junkies and Caroll County barflies. I started this thread to promote the event, one I have supported for many years and believe in. If you would like to start your own thread to address your issues please do. If you would like to start your own Jam, you are welcome to as well.
i rescind the request to close the thread... "rave on, it's a crazy feeling!" Buddy Holly [This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 04 April 2002 at 09:06 PM.] [This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 05 April 2002 at 06:32 AM.] |

The bottom line is this. If we are trying to raise monies for a good cause then we all should be volunteers...that is no one gets paid. That makes the whole thing more fun and mission gets accomplished. The fact is though if no one gets paid I would be willing to bet that a lot and perhaps most on the ticket would not show. Some would argue.."yea but look at the expenses these guys would have to pay". I counter that with OK the I understand if you can not volunteer this year and look forward to next. Boo I commend you on voicing your thoughts in this forum and I can certainly appreciate what you are saying. Talent is all around us and the local boys have a bunch and are willing to give it for free. Seems we should take it. On the other hand everyone has a right to start their own program and be able to "give" what they want to help others. If ya need help settin things up Boo give me a call... No Problem and no IOU's. You have to spend $ to make $. That's another 'bottom line' for you. It also seems to me that the price of these tickets is certainly comparable to plenty of other shows where NO money is going to charity. I can't believe this thread. |

What I could never figure is why "Steelin" for Hearts" has always been in a smoke filled venue. At least at the Birchmere, the music area is smoke free, and for those who wish to have a few cold ones, there is plenty of that. In fact, they make their own house brand. And as pointed out, the sound system is excellent and there is more space, inside and out(for parking). I also think the food is great. The Birchmere was designed to have muisc shows, it's not just a hall or a road side tavern and it is a big step up. Let's focus on the good all of this does and the bottom line of how it helps so many. So some get paid and some don't---so what's new, and so what anyway. It will be a great afternoon. |

look guys!!!!! everyone who has responded to this thread has made a good point. and i never entended my post to offend or undermind anyone that holds true for you dave aswell.im just saying what my opinion of this jam was suppost to be about, has lost its direction. i would drive 500 miles and pay the $25.00 to see these guys as well. like dave said some are legends and if not for these guys NONE of us would be playing steel today. i respect and admire each and every one of them but.i still dont think it should have been turned into a concert .now you can take that as you will, and have your own opinion they r after all like A## holes everyone has one and they all stink. Hey Boo, thanks for the mention of my name. It is always flattering to know that you are remembered, however so everyone knows -- I am not absent from the players list because I wasn't asked. I have had chronic health problems that have kept me sidelined or unable to make a committment to play. There have been several years that I planned on playing, only to end up in the hospital or having had surgery. I feel this is unfair to Dean to plan on having a spot in the show only to have to cancel on short notice. I would however, LOVE to participate in a more informal setting where my being there is not crucial to keeping a show on schedule. I definitely think that something needs to be done perhaps separately from "Steelin' for Hearts" that accommodates local players -- and for those traveling a distance, maybe have it on Saturday the day before "Steelin' for Hearts." If it is planned enough in advance, those of us who work in bands can plan on being off duty! Let's work together on ideas y'all, I'm up for it! Yours, Jo Ann |

Dave With all those great players and for a good cause,I think its a great deal. Add a little bit of Dave Van Allen's expertise and style of playing,,I think it will be a winner. Ya gotta have heart,,you guys that put on this show have it,and then some. Hey those of you who dispute this,,,"Have a "Heart" Its not a popularity contest,,its for a good cause. Good for you Dave. Just Do It. |
