I seen John Hughey with Vince Gill and John is just a great steel player. Right after that Porter Wagoner was on and then I heard a steel player that just blue my mind. Does anyone know who he is. Man he could really play the heck out of that steel.

Fred is a member of Porter's band. For a while, he worked for Waylon. Fred used to play lead guitar on "Nashville Now". That was when Larry Sasser played steel on that show. Fred sounds a lot like Mooney.

You are right, whoever that steel player was on the Willie set sure sounded like Ralph M. and was playing a GFI also. John H. saved the first part of the show, but after that it was down hill all the way. Too bad the sound people can't get it together on the Opery, or maybe it is just my satalite feed, but the sound mix is terrible up here in Imnaha.

Anyone know what kind of amp Vince Gill (and Willie) were playing through? It was the green one up on an Anvil case that said "Willie Nelson" on the case.

Could it be a Standel

Did anyone notice that Fred was playing Mooney licks on the back neck (like Mooney) and Dobro licks on the front neck? Wonder if he has his guitar set up like Mooney?

Good question Jim, I have thought of doing that with my steel. I have the setup but haven't fully decided if I want to lose the C6th tuning. Maybe Fred will tell us if he does that.

I think Blackie Taylor down in Riverside, CA has a steel set up something like that with the E9th on the bottom neck and a "fret board" on the top neck and I think it is a GFI also.

Guitar Player did an article of Fred while he was on Nashville Now where he said he came to Nashville with Christy Lane. He said the thing which gave him his big break was that he did the session with the Kendalls and played the licks on the record of "Heaven's Just a Sin Away". He said that after that a lot of people started asking who did that intro and he got a lot of session work from that one song. He also did the vast majority of the guitar work on Alabama's record. Jeff Cook said one night on TV that they'd record the songs and then Fred would teach him the guitar parts. At the Convention this year, Gene Fields told me that Fred had two GFI's with that same set up which has the Dobro neck on the front. He has a red and black one and a blue and black. The GFI which Blackie Taylor plays has a six string "fretted" neck on the front in regular guitar tuning which is played overhand ala Thumbs Carlisle. Gene F. plays one which is an 8 string and tuned in an open chord. I think it's E but I'm not sure.

Bob,
Willie played his old Baldwin transistor amp, I didn't notice what Vince was using. What a disaster for Vince and all the musicians having to deal with the sound problems.
