The greatest living pedal steel guitarist (according to this article) will be on the NBC Tonight Show this evening. So tear yourselves away from Bill Clinton on the Letterman show and check him out. |

He is entitled to his opinion, of course, but he's obviously never heard the Big E. or Doug Jernigan or Mike Smith or any of the other great pedal steelers. How could any informed individual make such a statement? JMHO. Memo to self: remember to remove adjectives such as greatest, best, only, from vocabulary. The awesome power of the press. What was the quote, about repeating a lie until it is taken as truth? Oh well. Guess I better get back to practicing. edit: my point is that using words such as "greatest" is fraught with folly. It's an opinion. Opinions can't be held as anything but a personal opinion. RR is great at what he does, he garners a LOT of attention for this instrument. But the only way he or E or anyone can be called "the world's greatest" is if indeed everyone in the world agrees. That's all. [This message was edited by Jim Lutz on 03 August 2004 at 11:05 AM.] |

I have heard Robert Randolph on the radio on a gospel hour show. He plays very well and precise. Love the way he uses his volume pedal. Also, he has a video which you can see on VH1, where he lays the steel on its side and upside done when he plays. |

Jack Mansfield Member From: Reno, NV |
should say that he plays the steel upside down. Forgot to say there is only one Buddy Emmons, and he is still the best!!!!! |

I think Ken Kase left the word "blues" out when he said RR is the world's greatest... Maybe, Ken doesn't know the pedal steel is a long standing country music instrument. Well, now we know how the sacred steelers felt all those years when most of the world thought the pedal steel was only a country instrument. By the way, if you go to the article link, you can click on Ken's name and send him an e-mail. I think assertions about Ken's lack of knowledge are appropriate, but please don't cast aspersions against RR and blues-gospel. This is not his fault. |

You know how to stir it up, E.B.! Thanks for the heads up. The VCR will do the rest. |

Perhaps we should all send the author Ken Kase a short note explaining that he may perhaps be incorrect in the words. If a man knows nothing of a subject but only one tiny tidbit and professes that he is an authority he should be corrected. HISTORY cannot be ingnored. This does not mean RR should not enjoy his moment but rather those that have preceeded him should not be ignored. Maybe he should be told that Loyd performed on over 6000 sessions with his original Sho-Bud..maybe he should be told who Paul Franklin is, obviously he will be told about Buddy and many others. Maybe he has never heard of Buck Owens or Ernest Tubb..anything is possible. At least this Ken Kase guy stated what the Instrument is...but what he does not know in reality is what a Pedal Steel Guitar is.. click on the article and then his name, you should be able to send him a quick note..and do be kind.Be positive... t [This message was edited by Tony Prior on 03 August 2004 at 03:42 PM.] |

From what I have read to date on the forum RR has gotton more than his fifteen minutes of fame.... Guys ..if this is where the steel is heading we all need to fasten our belts!! I'm not sayng we should be living in the past but the past is what got us here. So if RR needs this much press so be it...But then lets give it a rest... JD ------------------ |

One thing is sure, Ken Kase does not know anything about the pedal steel guitar; he knows less about Speedy West, he knows "O" about music , and his writeing is terrable when it comes to naming musicians and compareing same...In short,, HE STINKS.... Jennings,,,, Play steel for the sound of it. ------------------ |

How about backwards: How about upside down: I'm not saying Robert Randolph isn't a good player, but he's not, the "greatest living pedal steel guitarist." ------------------ [This message was edited by Ernie Renn on 03 August 2004 at 02:24 PM.] |

I hope I did not offend Ken, but I had to email and give my disertation (college word) about the greatest steel player. I had to mention several names, not just one, but Big E. was the first in line. Sorry I had to put my $.02 worth in. soap box time Mike |

Popular press writers are writers, they usually aren't researcher and musicologists. Don't be surprised if some time in the future RR starts inviting other steel players on to his stage for jams and recognition where it is due. |

Hey man I don't know about RR being the "Greatest living Steel Guitarist." Thats a pretty subjective statement given the Pedal Steel Royalty that hangs out around here. However, this quote "These cats could play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and make it groove to the point where Mary could care less about her lost lamb because she's too busy shaking her ass.", pretty much says it all about the band. Those boys know how to jam. No doubt about it. Now I'll tell you a concert that would be worth the money. Buddy Emmons along with RR jamming on some blues. Oh yeah!! Rick Garrett Edit to include this; If only Eric Clapton were a blues player (tongue way in cheek here) he could jam with them too! The e-mail address for the writer is wordgirl@nighttimes.com. I wonder if that is the writer or just someone who works there. I sent a lengthy e-mail anyhow. Everyone should do the same. ------------------ |

While Robert Randolph is a talented and unique steel player he definitely is not the greatest living player and will never be the greatest player of all time. Everyone has their own opinion and there will always be debating on the greatest. Robert Randolph has definitely brought the steel guitar into a different realm than it has been before. I admire him for the talent he possesses and his attitude apparently is down to earth. I sure am proud of him for playing these shows and showcasing the steel guitar. Too long the steel guitar has been stereotyped as a country music instrument and I have heard the comments about the whining and crying driving people crazy. I love the old country music but I sure love to hear some good jazz and even hear Robert play as well. Incidentally, my vote is for Buddy Emmons who has always been my personal favorite steel player. |

I just sent an email to this A-hole. I'm waitning for him to respond. I hope Randolph doesn't believe this crap. |

Wow! 22 hostile responses, and he hasn't even played yet. I wonder if we'll get as many reviews after the show airs as we did before it. |

I also sent an email. I believe it's a she. here is the text: No doubt you have gotten lots of messages about your RR is the greatest steel player alive, maybe ever. I hope they have been civil. As you have been informed by now, among the community of steel guitar players, Buddy Emmons holds the top spot. This is from real musicians who know the instrument and have played it for years. Musicians who have spent years on the road backing a variety of star talent. It's not meant to take away from the tremendous ability of RR. In fact he is pushing the envelope of the instrument and that can be nothing but good. In the relm of early rock and rollers there are dozens of great stars and players, but there is only one Elvis. In that same vain, there is only one steel guitar player. Buddy Emmons. Thanks for your time. Ken Lang Zebadia_1@yahoo.com Kevin: The email is wordgirl@nighttimes.com That leads me to suspect it is a female. I hope your email did not include A-hole. |

Such emotion! We run on a race track. RR took his and decided to go up and down moutains and cross rivers and jump over tractors and do wheelstands. Someday someone will do it with bagpipes and someone will get his skirt in a bunch about it. ------------------ |

Well after actually watching the show, I can see the reason for all the hostile reviews. Didn't bother me, didn't do anything for me either and I love rock and blues steel guitar. Reminds me of all the past and present rock and blues guitarist that are supposed to be the next big thing, they rarely are. |

Well, it was not my thing but I sure enjoyed his performance tonight. It was nice to see the builders logo on the guitar. Did anyone catch the wear and tear on the fretboard? He is gonna go thru fretboards like most of us go thru strings. He is a great act! Jerry |

RR did not. ------------------ |

With all due respect, Robert Randolph's work would not be sufficient inspiration to make me want to take up the instrument. I hate it when the masses wander off the trail from "Entertainment Tonight"... |

Geez! I saw the show and I must be gittin' old; I can only think of perhaps 15 or 20 cats I saw at the last Texas Steel Guitar Show that can "chew his meat" in any kind of music genre. Just my .02Cents worth. fred ------------------ |
