I have just finished a new cd of jazz standards , which include - My favourite things , Blue train , Yardbird Suite ,Autumn in NY, and yhe title track Moments Notice. Terry Bethel will have a review in the next issue of OSGA . The band is Phil Ware -piano , Hugh Buckley - guitar , Kevin Brady - drums , Dave Redmond -double bass. The cream of Irish jazz..

You have done a "GREAT" CD. The band is cookin', and you as usual are playing your b*#% off. Thanks for the advanced copy. I will do a complete review in the OzarkSGA newsletter due out next month.

"Song For My Father"? Coulda been me, as I've been doing that tune since mid-90's.
Several years ago at the Quad-cities Show I was so surprised when after playing the melody then couple choruses, I nodded to the guitarist, Roger Miller, for a solo, and before playing his solo, he sang a chorus or two of the lyric. Not too many know of that tune, let alone know the lyric!
(Actually there are two or more sets of lyrics for this tune.)
Sorry for following the 'topic drift', but wanted to answer the question.
Richard, I'm looking forward to hearing your work. Keep us posted as to when the CD will be listed in the forum catalog.

Hey Russ if that was you you did a great job of a great tune They used to use it on the opening of the snooker (big over here ) programme on T V . Do you do it in Fm? And Terry thanks . I forgot to say that I recorded all the tunes on a Bethel guitar built by the late Dick Millar. What a wonderful guy . I miss you Dick , you made me laugh .I suppose you know the stories Terry. Were they all true ?

Russ,

"Song For My Father" is a great tune which I'm currently attempting to teach myself. The story behind the lyrics are: Horace Silver's father was Brazillian and had quite an influence on Horace as well as the "music on the street" which he heard as a kid spending time in Rio de Janeiro.

I also like his "Senor Blues", a 12-bar blues with a bosa beat.

Are you asking Russ or me? As for me, I've only been working on the song a few days. So far, I've gotten the melody and chord structure, but I haven't figured out the best way to combine them for solo performance. I'm doing the song in F minor. As for the signature triplets in the melody, I haven't figured out how to play them. In fact, I was about to ask Russ if he has any ideas about that. How 'bout it Russ?

Richard, are going to have any CD's for sale?

Glenn, I just had a quick look at that song yesterday and I found the triplets difficult to play but that might just be me . I found it easier playing it as written and phrasing it my own way .This appeared to soud better but I dont know . I usually record a tune over a backing track to hear how it sounds and Ive given up on a lot of tunes because the just dont sit for me .I dont have a track for that one but im sure aebersold has . Anyway the cd is going to be available from Bobbe Semour and the osga, and my own email address which is in profiles .I will try to set up sales thru the forum , but I havent looked into it yet . The cd will be on sale at the Irish Steel Guitar Festival 9-10 oct where I will launch it .

Richard and Glenn,
I've wrote up some music for you on how I do the 'lick', however, I've been using an 'out-of-the-ordinary' pedal change that I've been experimenting with. It lowers the 3rd-string by a whole-tone from C down to Bb, and also raises strings 7 and 8 each up a whole-tone, from C and A up to D and B.
Here is how I'm playing it with that pedal -
Click > TAB & SOUND
Your question got me curious as to how to handle it on a more familiar set-up, and here's how I'd approach it - Click >TAB & SOUND.
On the tab, I put the pedal number in parenthesis after the note, and the 'KL' is the Knee that lowers the 3rd-string a half-tone from C to B. Pedal 4, of course, raises strings 4 and 8 a whole-tone, from A up to B.
If you left out the 'ornamentation' (sixteenth-note triplets) the Basic Melody could be played at the eighth fret on strings 1 through 6 (no pedals, with a 'D' on top).
Anyhow, that's my 'take' on it - hope somethings helpful here.

Yes most of Dick's stories were true. Some maybe enhanced a little as most of the road stories are.

Russ I found your reply extremly interesting . Thank you for the trouble you have gone to to domonstrate your approach. I was working on strings 12+3using pedal 6 and RKR lower on 3rd . Same result but yours sounds better as you are using the thicker strings. Im going to do some work on your stuff , I' ll grt back . I dont have the 4th string raise . And I'd like to know your theory behind your 4th pedal change.Ihave the Jernigan 4th change .
