Hey ya'll! I'll be in the Phoenix area the first week of January (1/2 - 1/7). Any tips on who may be playing in the area or where I should go to hear some steel guitar?

Lana,

Best steeler in town is John Rickard with a band called Harry Luge and Haywire. Here is the url for their site. http://www.harryluge.net/johnbio06.html
If you look at their dates, you see they play all over. A lot of the time they play at the Stardust Lounge, which is in northwest Phoenix on the northwest corner of 43rd Ave and Olive. I'll give you the url for mapquest because Olive becomes Dunlap at 43rd Ave, and if you take interstate 17, you get off at Dunlap. http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&country=US&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&addtohistory=&cat=&address=&city=&state=&zipcode=85029

The Bullseye Band is also outstandinghttp://www.thebullseyeband.com/

If you're here through 1/26-1/28, there is the Southwest Steel Guitar Convention http://www.swsteelguitar.com/new_page_1.htm

There are other steelers in Phoenix area that are excellent that I've seen mentioned on the forum, so you could find them with a search

Do yourself a favor, go to Cave Creek, a town just north of Phoenix.

Danny Sneed plays there at the Buffalo Chip Saloon....Great Steeler and a really nice guy. Mike Smith is also a good choice but you'd have to track him down.

Thanks! I'll be staying in Mesa but I hear it isn't too far from downtown Phoenix. Being that I have never been there, is it an easy place to get around in? Remember, I'm a country girl from the midwest...

I did try to schedule this trip for the last week so I could attend the steel jam but all the rooms were booked!! I wonder why? Hmmmm.

Thanks again guys, I'll look some of these folks up!

John Rickard hasn't been at the Stardust for a couple of years now. He is playing with Harry Luge in Mesa at a place called Rooster's. Do yourself the favor and make the trip to Cave Creek and to the Buffalo Chip to see Danny Sneed. If there's anybody better than Danny I can't imagine who. I just was up there last Saturday night and sat in with them. He's an unbelievable player and super nice guy. But check out John Rickard too, he's no slouch his own self.

Thanks, Brett. I like to go out for live music on week nights because it's less crowded. Wasn't this the place where Jr. Brown played last time?

And do you play out? I don't, and the Phoenix Noise Abatement Department likes it that way.

Thanks to everyone! I did check out those schedules and Danny is the only one I will be able to catch so far. Troy sent me some tips as well. I will be out there that week on business. As I mentioned to Troy, I am bringing a group of 100 and needed meeting space. That's why I couldn't find any rooms.

I'll be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I'm sure I can find someone playing on those nights. I couldn't possibly go an entire week without it! I'm looking forward to catching Danny's set.

Thanks again and please keep the tips coming!

Lana-Cave Creek is north of the Squaw Peak Mountains, where I once lived.

Mesa is quite a ways to the east of Phoenix and Tempe. I hope you enjoy the trip....al

Anybody object to me mentioning the schedules for these Phoenix area players? I have my show on Saturday and thought I would let my listeners know where to find these players.

Daryl, i'll be at a place called The Curve at 83rd avenue and pEORIA on 12-9-05 from 9 til 1 a.m. I'm brand new to steel so I won't be playing out with it for a long time. I'm fronting the band for a friend tomorrow. His name is George Edmonds. George will be playing lead. He does play steel too but I'm not sure he will bring it tomorrow. I'll also be at The Buffalo Chip on the 16th of December from 9 til 2. I will have a steel in that band. That will be the guys I usually play with. Try Buffalo Chip on the weekends they don't normally pack em' in like Harold's. That's why I like going there. That and Danny Sneed.

All times are Pacific (US)
