Wow, am I glad I made this trip. I couldn't understand what difference, if any, there would be between the STL show, which I've always attended and this one, but now I know.
It's the music!!
Just a whole different flavor to the show down here, starting off with the back up house band.
Dean Baxter on fiddle and Bob Meyers on clarinet! sound like a whole Bob Wills horn/fiddle section!
(Bob twins all his parts perfectly with the fiddle)
A lot of stand up bass, also.
But also in the choice of songs played, and their arrangements.
And, a lot of sharing the stage with two steelers together.
Stand out performances so far (for me) have been Bobby Bowman with Robby Springfield, Bert Rivera (wow..what a set) and David Wright with Lonnie Bennett.
The Carter room knocked me out with guest band Brian Sklar and his band.
This featured twin fiddles and twin steel guitar! (One, the great Billy Phelps).
The MSA room with Reese and David Wright jamming with Russ Hicks, Jonathan Candler, etc. was great too.
Mike Sigler should get some kind of endurance award for his non stop high energy playing in the GFI room...unbelievable!
Oh yeah, hanging around the Beard room watching Mike Auldridge sitting around playing and teaching was no small treat either!
Very friendly people, a renovated beautiful hotel, excellent food....I'll be back next year!!

Tony, You make me proud to be a Texan. The Texas show is a great show. I make it every year for at least one night. There are times where two steelers share the stage. Johnny Bush is scheduled to sing tonight and I have seen Hank Thompson sing as well. Last year I saw Hal Rugg,Randy Beavers,John Hughey and Paul Franklin share the stage at the same time. Hal was sick and did not feel like he could do a performance by himself so his friends played music with him that night. The crowd had so much electricity and people were standing everywhere. It was the last time I saw Hal Rugg play and I hope I never forget that night. Saturday nights show is always awesome. Paul Franklin will be back this year and I am twisting in my seat just waiting to see him again. If you have never been to the Texas show you have missed a great show. Texas does have friendly people and the TSGA knows how to put a great show together.

Tony you should have gone to the Atlanta Steel Guitar Travaganza back in 1997 when Anna and I sat in the front row seat for three days and two nights strait. There were 43 Steel players and the only two Pros that were not there was Buddy Emmons and John Hughey all the rest were there. It was just Awsome and all the Venders were there to.Have a ball maybe Anna and I will go next year. That and St. Louis are the only two biggeis I have not been to yet.

Between just purchasing a GFI steel and an upcoming vacation to Mexico, there were no funds to go to the show.

But I just told my wife this morning that we should plan on heading to Dallas next year-don't wanna miss it. I was looking at the agenda-an embarrasment of riches for steel players and fans thereof!

I just bought the Waylon Live double cd with 42 songs the other day that was recorded in '74. That was the period when I saw Waylon live the one time in my life. Moon of course is all over that cd. What a thrill it would be all these years later to see him play at the Texas show.

Last year's edition with Hal Rugg making his final appearance. What an honor and thrill for all those that were able to witness this, and for Randy, John, and Paul to play with him. That was something that was priceless, no doubt.

More killer performances today from Maurice Anderson and Paul Franklin together playing non pedal superslides, Russ Hicks and Randy Beavers doing incredible twin steel arrangements and Dan Tyack and Lonnie Bennett teaming up in the non pedal room for some blues!
Paul Franklin's set Saturday night topped it all off...what a show!
My favorite of the weekend though had to be Brian Sklar and his band in the Carter room with Billy Phelps and Rob Anderson both on steel. Thanks to John Fabian for bringing them in.

Hello all: Just got home from Dallas. Have to say Amen to all the above. I can't believe I've lived 72 yrs. within 200 miles of this show & this was my first one. Lord willing, it won't be my last. I want add a name to the list of backup band members already mentioned. Roy Rossetta!!!!. This man must be made of titanium, not iron. I got there at 9 am friday Roy was already at his keyboard, the main show went till after midnight & Roy was there on Every set. This from a man who is not long up from a serious sick spell. Gotta love a man that dedicated. As said, All those guys are tops. Most sincierlly Andy H.

Well, ya'll bragg all you want , but if you didn't stay after Joe Wright's set (which was killer) Saturday night and see Tommy Morrel and The Time Warp Tophands, you MAY have missed the iceing on the cake!! (Now don't get me wrong, the cake was good, too!) I'd crawl on my belly backwards from Oklahoma to see Tom Morrel pick! Those boys know how to get it done!

Yes, it was a super show, and Jody, you had a big hand in making it that. It was sad to hear this was your last time as M.C. but of course you've earned a breather. Thanks for what you've done over the years.

It was an incredible show with incredible music and people. However, I feel compelled to bring this one observance to the forefront....

STEELERS HAVE THE WORST AIM!

Next year I'm wearing hip waders when I enter the men's room!

Now I've been a member here for years and I can't count the threads on cabinet drop, ET vs JI, tone, mechanics, electronics, and music theory. When it comes to these things, everyone is so exacting. Mention any one of the topics above and there's a 4 page thread with scientific facts and exact tolerances.

But why is it, when there's a cake 14 times the size of a fret dot, that nobody can even come close to hitting it?

If someone is a half cent off A440, there's another 4 page thread but when someone sprays like a shotgun, not a word.

Even those who profess that it's all in the hands, should practice what they preach!

I suggest two things......that Petersen make a strobe aimer and that Albert Tally puts a sign on the entrance to the men's room....The Piddle Steel Guitar Convention

Great show and I'll be back next year (if I'm not tarred & feathered)......

Howard, you're a riot!
Here I am, wondering what insights you might have on the fantastic music and marvelous instruments we saw at the TSGA show and we get.....a urinal review!
(you're right...how does it get that bad?...never mind, don't answer)
p.s.I finally got to hear the heart and soul of the TSGA jamboree, Tom Morell's midnight western swing dance party...it was the best part of the weekend!!!

I'll post some photos this evening (not of the urinals) on this thread and then I'll start a thread in No Peddlers fron a non pedal point of view.

Amazing experience it was. Can't say enough about it.

Well, I'll say this. The players, as great as they are, are the nicest, friendliest, most approachable human beings that you can meet. I have never felt any of the less because I have nowhere near their talant.

I don't know what it's like in other musical conventions, but it sure is down home right here.

Jim, You are mistaken my friend. Tom did his usual Saturday Night dance. And the Timewarp Tophands did there usual KNOCKED OUT job.

A quick thanks to Albert and all of the TSGA staff and PLAYERS for an extremely enjoyable weekend. Dee and I had a great time. Both pretty tired today tho.

A quick special thanks to Reece's drummer [Nathin]. He loaned me HIS set of brushes to use for the rest of the show. Mine were accidently borrowed... Anyway, NAte, yours are on there way to Reece, and I'm sure he will get them to you.. Man, I can't thank you enough. Thanks for the HELP..

All in all, a GREAT TSGA show. Already looking to next year. Right Tommy D.....

bye

WOW !! my friends, Barbara and I just rolled in from Dallas. A bit tired, but it's a satisfying "tired"!!!! I really needed the therapy this show provided me after my long bout with some health problems. It's great to be back at work. This was the "umpteenth" year that I have had the previlege to do the keyboard work at the TSGA show and I gotta tell you it get's better every year. "KUDO'S" to Albert Talley, and the entire TSGA leadership and staff for a job well done.
What a great show....the players were all super and all played there hearts out to entertain those who were in attendance. Well done guys !!!
Thanks to the TSGA for having me again this year. Barbara and I are looking forward to next year.

Yes it was a great show !!!! Mitzi and I had a great time. The band did a real good job on my show and I was happy with it. With people like Roy Rosetta and Paul Polish on the band stand you can't go wrong. And the most friendly people you ever saw are always at the Dallas show.We really appreciate Albert and Debbie Talley . They have a tough job keeping the show firmed up and they along with the TSGA crew are doing a wonderful job. Buck & Mitzi Grantham

Paul Polish is really a heck of a drummer! He played any kind of beat that was needed, and did it smoothly. So good to see Roy Rosetta on the keyboard after the scare he gave us a while back. On the way home I played a new Doug Jernigan cd and it had some terrific singing on it by Roy, and guess what? He's a heck of a singer, I wouldn't mind having a cd of his vocals. In the MSA room I saw a beautiful double eight Super Slide with a card that said "Sold to HowardR". I tried to convince them it was a typo, supposed to say HowardT, but they wouldn't go for it. Oh well, I did bring home a new Mullen D-10, so I'm happy.

Jerry and Austin had a great time at Dallas. Thanks to Roy & Paul. I agree with the award they need. I don't know how they can stay and play all day and night the way they do. Thanks to Larry King for sitting in on bass for Jerry and Austin's set. Donna

Just back from Dallas, it was worth travelling fifteen hours each way, fantastic show.Main stage was great ,but highlight for me was in the Carter room, these guys were fantastic. We had a large contingent over from the UK ,and everybody just loved it(some more than others, going home with a new Millenium, a new Rains, and an order for a new Zum Hybrid to be cllected next year). Thanks to everyone who made us all so welcome.
