Thanks, Bob, I'm sure that will make Joe's Day, He does not have a computer, and was saying on the phone, There are not many steady gigs around San Jose, like in years past, My last gig in that area was at, The Redwood Lounge, in Sunnyvale,CA, about 1979, Playing Steel, and Fiddle, Herbie ------------------ |

I see Joe every Thursday. I was the steel player for a couple of night when Joe was playing guitar. I even sat in last Thursday on Joe's guitar which was interesting. He plays D9th as has some weird pedal changes. Joe is a great guy and I am glad he is my friend. To top it off, the bass player is an old friend from the 80's and my first ex-wife sings with them. |

Yep Richard, Of course Joe takes after His older Brother,,ha,, had to toss that in, Would love to be there to sit in with you folks, Joe has been accused of reversing His home pedals, and tuning down to D9,th so I cant play His steel when I visit, So they always hand me a Fiddle, Herbie ------------------ |

I play the DAy setup same as Joe, except he has no C pedal, and his knee levers are different. He has his D-D# (E-f on E9) on LKL which is the opposite of where it should be on a Day setup. It's real hard to have your foot pressing pedal 3 and bend your knee to the left. |

I use the E9.th and only 2 knee levers, one lever lowers both E strings, The other lever drops the first string, which I use to toss in 7,ths. using the chromatic strings. The Steel,an Emmons, S 10,6 pedals, serial # 1200 S I bought from, Dean Markley, back in early 1970's when Dean had His first little Music Store in Santa Clara, It has paid for a lot of bacon and beans ------------------ |

The most confusing Steel I ever tried to play, was, Zane Becks, Personal Steel, A never to forget gig.!! Zane invited me to set up my Emmons, right next to His Steel, first time ever to play with 2 steels in a four hour gig, He asked me to try out his Steel, I think it had 14 strings, and stretched, and lowered the strings from both ends of the Steel. I could not find a complete chord on it, about a month after that gig, The band I was touring with was picking at Dodge City,KS, we got the phone call, Zane had a heart attack while on stage, They took Him to the Hospital, where He passed on a couple days after, Often Wished I had a recording of that gig. Zane was a prince of a fellow, never looked down on any Steel player, and always ready to help a new student. ------------------ |
