Hey Gang, I am looking for a picture(s) of a Sea-Foam Green Fender 1000 D8 Pedal Steel. Also, any info on what year(s) these were made, and do they have the good changer fingers and roller nut, etc. Thx! Pete B. |

Uhhh...I don't believe Fender pedal steels were ever offered in "custom colors"! (Jody might know for sure.) I've seen a lot of them painted different colors, and heard people say they're "original", but I've never seen any documentation that the factory ever offered anything other than the stardard finish, which was blond on the early ones (pre-'63), and sunburst on the later ones. (Although there were a few special-model, all-black ones produced.) After 1963 (when the sunburst finishes were adopted), all of my old catalogs and literature clearly state: "Sunburst finish only" So, until I see some Fender literature, or an original sales receipt that states a custom-color was ordered and received, I am skeptical whenever someone says their custom-colored Fender pedal steel is original! Addendum: The "Sea Foam Green" color was first used by Fender in 1963, on their Stratocaster, (and by DeSoto, in 1955 ). 1963 is the same year Fender went to the Sunburst finishes on their pedal steels, and also about the time they went to the redesigned bridge and roller nut. Fenders with the early (non-roller) nut and rod bridge are bringing the better price on the market right now, even though they were a poorer design. I'm told this was a custom shop color. I am trying to track down the friend of a friend who has this guitar for sale, but was hoping to get a look at a 1000 in this color. |

Seems I remember a post talking about Ralph Mooney had a seafoam green 1000. Perhaps it was a special one-off custom made for a high profile player. I agree with Donny, I don't think custom colors were an option for the everyday player.[This message was edited by Tim Whitlock on 14 September 2004 at 12:21 PM.] |

Hey Guys In all my years at Fender I have Never Ever seen a Pedal 2000 400 or 800 in anything but sunburst. Ditto on the 1000 & 400. I do have myself one of the first of the muted brown shade of a so called sunburst it has a lighter softer color and the finish is a satin finish and not the orange to black gaudy shade which I never really liked. Carl West was the ONLY one who had Leo make up a custom finish which was lake Placid blue as Donny explained. My 1000 has the jazzmaster pickups and the chrome pedals. Donny knows more about Fender than I do and I spent over 35 years with Fender.Speedy had the last of the 1000 with the new darker finish and Leo was going to make one up for Speed but Speedy like the darker finish.[This message was edited by Jody Carver on 25 October 2005 at 03:28 PM.] |

I have an old Fender 400 pedal steel in the old cream color, not sunburst, and it is original. Guess it is pre-63? Anyone able to date these by serial number? Also, I was over at Jedd Hughes' house the other day doing a session and he had a red 400 that was on loan from Dan Dugmore. Don't know if it was a refin or not, but it sure looked cool. There are plenty of blond original 400's and 1000's around. And ALL of them (including the 800's and 2000's) were available in custom Duco colors according to some of the sales literature and conversations with current and old Fender employees. See my note in the other thread on this.that being said, 999.9% of the original ones are Sunburst or blond. |

I've seen one Fender 1000 that my friend Merv Dawson owned that was a really pretty pale blue. Merv told me that he had the guitar re-done so I don't have a clue as to whether it was a factory color or not but it sure was pretty. Never did hear how it sounded.Rick |

I had a 60s seafoam green Fender 1000. I traded it to Bill Brown out in Okla. It was a true factory finish. Over the years the seafoam finish fades into a strange combination of greens and blue, sort of a teal color after 20 or 30 years.Edit. After researching some of the Fender colors from the 60s I will have to say that the guitar I had may have been a Teal Green. It is hard to say after so much yellowing over time. What I do know is that it WAS a Fender custom color on a 1000 D8 Fender. It was either Seafoam or Teal. [This message was edited by Bill Hatcher on 26 October 2005 at 10:22 AM.] |
