I'm new here and I need to listen to more pedal steel guitar. There is more than just a simple reason for this. I'm not really playing pedal steel, I'm playing elelctric slide balalajka. I sometimes try to emulate the sound of a pedal steel on my instrument. It's not really possible but sometimes I get reasonably close. I use a volume pedal and try to phrase like a pedal steel player would. For this reason I ask you to recommend me some good recordings. I'm as interested in back-up playing as I am in soloing, infact maybe more into the back.up thing. I play mostly blues and jazz myself but I'm open to all kinds of good music. I ask you here on this forum cause I think you know something about it and also this way I can stop bugging my good friend Mike Perlowin about this cause he has too much to do.

I have one record (except Mike's two recordings) and that's Steel Guitar Jazz with Buddy Emmons. It's not his best I've been told although it's not bad at all. I also have some older recordings with Bob Wills, but that's lap steel, right? And yeah, some of the stuff on those Sacred Steel recordings is pedal steel too, and some of it is great.

Anyway, all recommendations will be appreciated thankfully, although I may not be able to listen to it all. Anything that's more in the blues or jazz field might be a little more intersting for me but I need to listen to more country too so why not.

"Nashville Sundown", Curly Chalker

"A ton of steel", Jimmie Crawford

"Steel Guitar", Buddy Emmons

"Sings Bob Wills", Buddy Emmons

"How the west was swung", Tom Morrell and the Time Warp Top Hands, a delicious series of CD's
(non-pedal mostly)

The Forum catalog is a good place to buy most of these, Steel Guitar Canada also have lots of CDs.

A great album for Steel Guitar 101 is Ray Price 'Nightlife'. It has almost everything you need to know for traditional country steel playing.

Another great album for steel that everyone always recommends is Charley Pride 'Live at Panther Hall' It's a masterwork and a landmark.

Those are very country records. For jazz there's not much better than Curly Chalker 'Big Hits on Big Steel'

I have the Tom Morell CD, forgot to tell. That was one of Mike's recommendations. Thanks for the tips, I'll check it out.
