When I first heard Mike Johnson's solo on the Daryle Singletary version of 'I Never Go Around Mirrors' it just floored me. It seemed so far beyond my level that I didn't even try it for awhile. But I've been fooling with it a lot and darned if I haven't got it figured out. If I'm not playing it note for note it's pretty close...close enough to be very satisfying for me. My intonation needs work on that ascending (chromatic?) single note run...that's the hardest part for me, but I get to feeling a little more like a real steel player after I pull it off. He's a fantastic steel player, and one heck of a nice guy. "Mirrors" is a lot like The Derailers "Vision to dream on" which is on my "To Do" list. Do you have "Mirrors" tabbed out? Charlie

I'm not handy with tab at all, I just learned the solo by listening to it slowed down with 'Amazing Slow Downer' software. What I do is burn a CD with some slowed down practice tracks and play along with it. I'm not quite ready to try the solo in public just yet but it's shaping up nicely.

I really have to force myself to decipher tab but from what I can make out I'm more or less on the right track...most of the right notes but in slightly different positions. For one thing I've been kicking off the solo on string 7 at the 5th fret instead of 9 at the 9th like you have tabbed. And I need to change a couple of licks and use my F# to G# lever instead of what I was doing on the high part. It's a powerful solo...very expressive the way it builds.

I believe my Buddy Jeff Lampert tabbed the solo sometime ago; but I tabbed all the intro and fills and outro for Danny Hullihen at one time. But believe me; what ever Jeff tabbed is the exact notes at the exact fret> he has the most wonderful ear I've ever....... Ricky
