Some news for those of you who wondered where Ricky Davis' old Blue Darlin' Fulawka went after the last sale this summer. It now lives a happy life on Swedish soil and shares room with my old Sho-Bud Pro II Custom.

After a very smooth business transaction with the seller Doug Berry, I picked up the blue beauty at Ricky's home in Austin in the beginning of this month. Played it for an hour or two together with Ricky and his sweetheart Sho-Bud LDG and got to know my new guitar. I then spent the rest of the evenings during that visit in Austin either on the hotel room with the Fulawka or on one of the great music places in that town listening to guitar music (by Redd Volkaert, Cindy Cashdollar Jim Loessberg, Ricky Davis et al).

I have now had the Fulawka in my possesion for more than two weeks and it has gotten pretty used to the Swedish climate. I have also spent some time to set it up according to my preferences (including a somewhat new copedent) and my impressions so far is that this is an exceptionally fine guitar. Not only does it have the looks, it also plays as smooth as ... well, I don't know what, as I haven't owned too many guitars yet ... but it sure has made my playing technique become better in all aspects. And it has that great Sho-Bud:ish timbre that I cherish so much, coupled with a brighter sweetness that is very Emmonesque. The Jerry Wallace pickups are a perfect match for this guitar.

Thank you Doug and Ricky for helping me be the new owner of this fine instrument!

Here are two sound clips I made after the setup was finished ... one with the E9 neck and one with the C6 neck. The C6 stuff is a noodlin' jazzy thing that I made while fantasizing about Rick Schmidt's wonderful rendition of 'Goodbye Porkpie Hat' (that recording still gives me goosebumps ... wish I could play that good). The clips were recorded directly into my Zoom digital portable studio.

Yes; this "Blue Darlin" Fulawka is certainly in good hands and a great Home. I've been working with Jan; via online instruction and two sit downs here at my house for a year. You can tell that Jan has an extreme talent and a natural feel for playing Steel guitar> that sounds great pal.
Larry; as Jan said in his posting; that those are Jerry Wallace Pickups; ie: TrueTone. I actually put those in; as me and Jerry worked on finding the perfect single coil ohmage for the voice of this Fulawka...>I think we went through quite a handfull of tries; before "WALA THAT'S IT" and of course the mounting in a Fulawka is different from any other Steel; as well as pretty much every single part of the fulawka. I loved the Fulawka Humbuckers that Ed hand winds for all his steels; but I'm a single coil guy and wanted to know the difference...and it really brought the nuances out that are there. So Jerry Wallace does have the exact template for a TrueTone to go in a Fulawka; if one so desires.
Good going Jan and I'm proud you have it.
My last gig with that Blue Darlin'; I played Farewell Party for Ed at the Convention; I wish folks could see the joy on my face when I played that for Ed.

Larry: Yes, these are a pair of TrueTones that Ricky ordered for the Fulawka. Ricky told me he tried several versions of the pickup until he found the optimal ones for this particular guitar. If I recall correctly the DC resistance for these pickups are 17,500 Ohms. Maybe Ricky will chime in and add whether there are any other special features of the pickups.

Oops, three minutes too late ... Ricky already replied ...

Grattis! What a beauty, and what a great tone! If you ever should get the slightest urge to sell it: don't hesitate, act on that notion immediately – just drop me an e-mail and I will pick it up, cash in hand, the very same day, seriously!

Jan...Beautiful guitar. If I was'nt rock hard Sho~Bud man, that is the only other brand of "new" guitar I would consider! By the way, I have your new changer boxed up. Will go out Monday morning Priority Air Mail. Thank you for your patience with the problem with the chrome shop. It's too bad some other folks could'nt show the same patience!! Also, thank you Ricky Davis for coming to my defense concerning this. Coop

Hey Ricky, It was great to sing while you played this beautiful BLUE STEEL GUITAR in St. Louis in 2003.
A friend of mine Gary Sill video taped that whole show that we did in the Fulawka Room, and it turned out great.
This is one of the nicest guitar's I have ever scene.

Per: Thanks for the offer, but I won't let go of this beauty just yet; you must give me a chance to tame it first. If it keeps throwing me off the saddle I might reconsider. But I see that you live almost next door so you're more than welcome to come see/play it if you happen to be in my neck of the woods.

John: Waiting for your super fingers has been no problem. It's like they say in the Carlsberg beer commercials: "Worth waiting for".

I have to say the Blue Darlin' is my favorite of the steels I've seen on the forum.

That's what I meant Richard, honest! I'm color-blind; thanks for clearing this up.
(Really, it's the bottom end of your beast that is fascinating.)

Wow, that's a mighty solid pull string (rope?) in that Burton's volume pedal.

Just thought I'd finish this thread with a nice picture of my two steel guitars that have just become best friends (after an initial bout of jealousy). Look how they shine! I'm very fortunate to have two great sounding guitars at this time.

And thanks a lot for all the nice comments regarding my Fulawka sound clips!
