Topic: P-90 style Steel pickup????

Wanted to get some input about the possibility of P-90 type steel pickups and does anyone offer that style and if not, why not. The P-90 as pertains to guitar offers something quite in the middle of a single coil Strat type and a dual coil humbucker type. The only pedal steel pickups I've seen by various makers is the single coil or humbucker. Anyone have knowledge of what I'm proposing. Seems as though a P-90 style on Pedal Steel would offer something quite different in tone. Thoughts??????------------------

This certainly isn't current production, but my 1949 Gibson Electraharp has an early 8-string P-90 pickup on it. This is one of the early late 40s versions with non-adjustable polepieces, and it sounds fantastic. It sounds, to my ears, like a cross between a Charlie Christian bar-magnet pickup and one of the later, more midrangey P-90s from the mid-50s. It is warm, but has a lot of clarity. I'd love to hear something like this on an old Sho Bud.I've never seen a modern steel with anything that resembled a P-90, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. I can't see why a custom winder couldn't put something like this together. |

Dave, you're hearing the same thing that I am, with the 8 string P-90. So if you have one for 10 or 12 string would be a different sound for the pedal steel. Think I'll call Lollar since he seems to like experimenting.------------------

Yeah, I have to admit it gives me ideas. I have an old round-front Sho Bud that would be a good candidate, except that it's so clean and sounds so good with the original tapped-coil pickup on it that I'm afraid to touch it. I guess I need to look for a beater that I could experiment with. I think this sound would be great for C6 or maybe E6 or E13 to get a bit "older" sound, if you know what I mean. That's what I got the Electraharp for, but I plan to use it mainly for nonpedal steel - that particular mechanism isn't anything like a modern pedal steel mechanism. I'd like to have something with that type of setup, but with pedals. |
