I've noticed a lot of Timeouts the last two days. It's just the Forum, nothing else, from my end.

We've been having problems ever since the storm hit yesterday morning. There's a cable about 4 blocks long that goes from the SBC office to the Forum. It carries 100 pairs of lines. The guy they sent out couldn't find one pair in the cable that's reliable enough for T1 service.

They've sent a crew to examine the cable underground and fix any bad splices. If the weather holds, we might be okay through the weekend on this existing line, but they gotta fix this. At $825/month, I expect near 100% up time.

A wet cable, if they can't find "dry" pairs and don't have another cable to switch to the only option is wait until it dries or if they can find where it's wet they can try drying it out.

I went through that a lot with local "drops" into offices. But, they were not T1 lines - mostly standard "3002" voice grade (analog) lines. Digital lines, e.g. T1, DDS, etc had higher requirements than the 3002 lines and they usually had differnt cables for those. But SBC (Southwest Bell) and US West were my two "toughest" LEC's to get repairs done.

It's still glitching. We had a brief hiccup about an hour ago. My recommendation: whenever that happens, move away from the computer, put on your picks and practice.

I worked for the phone Co. for 32 years before being forced in to early retirement.
That is just what we would do. If we had a 100 pair cable with eighty pair working we would keep switching pairs until there was nothing left to cut to.The company did not want to spend the money to fix the bad spot!
They could not care less if there were 40 or 50 NEEDLESS out of services.
30 years ago when the local Bell networks were a regulated utility People would have been fired for allowing such Pi$$ Poor Service to good paying clientele!

I think the problem is we are not paying enough for Internet services..

If you actually want to be connected, you have to pay more...

bOb. Tell SBC there are lot's of companies that make wireless T-1 Radios. We use them up to 40 Miles. 8 channels (T-1'S). AFC, Adtran, ect. No problems with any of them. Is SBC like Quest? Still using 1950's plant?

SBC - now "AT&T Inc" since it bought AT&T and was originally Southwestern Bell before the breakup and up to about 1996.

They weren't originally in California so I would think either they purchased a local LEC or bought/leased cables from a LEC and if that's the case who knows how old the cable is. It was probably installed when everything was Analog.

Is data still a "permissive" tariff? Like, it's great if it works for you but if it don't, too bad?
That's what Bell 103A's 212A's and 201C's were around here years back.

Data is no longer the "stepchild" that it used to be. The old Analog data circuts were nothing more than standard voice grade circuits and even with the C2 conditioning it still was "it's a voice grade circuit".

With the Digital data lines (both copper and optical) it's a different story. However, as with all Telco lines you get what you pay for. If you want to pay extra you can get "high priority" line service. Since the forum is not a "critical" circuit there is really no need to pay extra for a "high priority" circuit.
