Here's a sound file for the tab. It's a 332K .wav file, so it might take a minute or two to download from a slow connection. Might take me a day or two to get to the next one. Your move, Mr.Steele...

Nice useage of the 6th. ped. over the B7th. chord in the first go-around, Jerry. Nice chromaticism. I'm learning.
By the way, what guitar are you playing on that wav. file?

Very nice, John (Steele)! I'll have to work hard to keep up with you.

John L., Thank you for the kind words. Actually, it's the 5th pedal for a B7 chord at the ninth fret. You can play the F#m7b5 with pedal 6 at the ninth fret, then rock over to to the 5th pedal for the B7.

The guitar is a Carter, an instrument which has always pleased me. (but let's not start that brand x versus y argument here, folks...)
I have Lawrence 710's on both necks.

I'll try to post another 4 bars tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Alright, almost halfway through the tune. Here's my solo on bars 13-16:

F#m7b5 B7 Em

2------------------|---------------------|---------|-----------|
3-9----------------|---------------------|---------|-----------|
4---10-9-----------|---------------------|---------|-------7~8~|~9~~~~
5--------9-8-------|---------------------|---------|------7~~8~|~9~~~~
6------------8-5-6-|-7------7------------|---------|-----7~~~8~|~9(6)~

8------------------|---7-------9---------|-7-------|-7~~~~~~~8~|~9~~~~
9------------------|------------9(5)-----|---------|-----------|
10-----------------|----------------9(5)-|---------|-----------|

And, here's the sound file that goes with it. Again, it's a 332K .wav file.

Thanks for responding Jerry. The reason I ask about the guitar is that I was seriously looking at Carters at Wayne Link's due a month ago and I was looking for "that" tone that you got on that wave file, but did not find it on those guitars. That's hands notwithstanding. Also, the wave file really helps me hear the changes. Do you have a really good soundcard? Could I make one with a generic soundcard and an input from my Mackie mixer into the mic input of my computer? I'd like to join you boys.
PS- Jerry, in playing over the F#m7b5, are you regarding it as a diminished (half) and thinking about diminished scales for it? It's been a stumbling block for me.

John, if I may jump in here... Yes, by all means, join in! The more the merrier.
Yes, the F#m7b5 chord is also called "F# half-diminished". You have two scale choices to use over this chord. First, the 7th mode (locrian mode) of the major scale. In the case of F#m7b5, it comes from the G major scale.
e.g. F#-G-A-B-C-D-E-F#. That's the one Jerry used. Look closely at his tab for bar 13, and you'll find they are all notes from the G major scale.
The second option in the 6th mode of the melodic minor scale, (also called Locrian, or half-diminished mode)in this case, for F#m7b5, you'd use A melodic minor.
e.g. F#-G#-A-B-C-D-E-F#. You'll notice the difference between the two lies simply in G# versus G natural. The melodic minor mode sounds more "modern". I'll try to use it in my next four bars as an example. The diminished scale you mentioned is not used for half-diminished chords. Only for diminished chords and 7b9 chords. (The pickup bar I wrote leading into bar #1 used the Half-step-whole step diminished scale over the E7b9)(E-F-G-G#-A#-B-C#-D)
This dialogue is great! I'm going to keep my comments on sections in the "notes" thread though, in case someone wants to print this one off.
- John
p.s. It might be timely to dig up that old thread on Modes in the bar chatter section, I'll look for it!

John L, I posted my "tech notes" on the "notes" thread. Thanks.

Looking forward to shifting gears on the bridge with some different changes...

This is one of the best things I've seen since I've been on line. When you guys get thru, would it be possible to get a sound wav of the finished product? That would be the icing on the cake. Keep it going...you too John Lacey.

Better squeeze in where I can! This is a departure from the other guys, with a steal from Buddy! The octaves are played in dotted quarters and eighths, and a bit of overlap into the 5th. bar. Sorry, whoever.
Also, I wasn't able to record using my sound recorder, so phone me and I'll Hum it to you!

No, it's not your comp. I think I may
have imposed too much on Jerry's webspace. He's been very kind to put these sounds up on his limited space. Please e-mail me, and I'll send you the file. I think it's the best of the bunch I posted. It's 77KB, not too big.
Fun fun fun...
-John
p.s. I'm going to inquire into putting these up on some webspace of my own.. might take a couple of days. Until then, Jerry, Thanks!!

John and Jerry:

Just wanted to say 'thank you' for this thread, and the related ones. They are a gas. I printed off the phrases and have been fooling around with them for the past few days, as Autumn Leaves is a tune I love to play. Great ideas; I'm learning a lot!
By the way, I think there may be a few tab errors (or else I'm confused... very possible!)I point these out not to be critical, but just in case someone else out there is struggling along trying to make it come out right.

John: in your bar #27, I believe the Db#11 lies on the 8th fret with pedals 6+7, not on the 9th fret as shown. Resolves beautifully down one fret to Cmaj7

Jerry: in your bar #30, I know that a B7#9 is on the 2nd fret with pedal 8, but the sound file sure sounds to me like you're staying on the 3rd fret, playing more of the C7#9 that you played in the previous measure. Also, the last note in bar 30 sounds to me to be a B on the fourth string at the 2nd fret, rather than a C# at the 4th fret as shown.

And, thanks for teaching me what to do with that full-step lower KL on my 5th string: it's beautiful! I hadn't gotten around to using it yet.

Any time you guys want to kick off another tune, I'll be tuning in. (Please!)

Jim, I checked the tab, and you're correct about that last note in bar 30, it is on the 2nd fret instead of the 4th. I think what's fooling your ear on the sound file is the voice leading that I'm using. I'm playing C9 using pedal 8 plus the knee lever lowering the third string, then letting off the knee lever, and going down to the 2nd fret for B7#9, thus maintaining the D note, but changing the chord under it.
