Here are some two-finger scales I've worked out. In the tab:

b means lower string 1/2 step
# means raise string 1/2 step
X means raise string 1 step

For this first one, you need to be able to raise your first and fourth strings, and lower your second string. Only the first 5 strings are shown, and the name of the note is under it.

F#_________1___________3___________4#__________6___________8________
D#___1___________3b__________4___________6___________8______________
G#____________1___________3___________4___________6___________8_____
E ______1___________3___________4#__________6#__________8___________
B __________________________________________________________________
e f g a f g a b g a b c a b c d b c d e

F#____________9#______________11______________13____________________
D#____9_______________11______________13____________________________
G#________________9_______________11______________13________________
E ________9#______________11#_____________13________________________
B __________________________________________________________________
c d e f d e f g e f g a

This next one uses strings 1, 2, 4 and 5. Note that the pedal is down on string 5 for the whole exercise.

Looks good, Bobby. Now how do you pick those notes?

It could be done with one string per finger, Joe Wright style, but I just alternate thumb-finger-thumb-finger.

You could also try fingerpicks

Looks good, -b0b-. Just one teeny weeny error: 4th, uh, 4th tab, uh, 4th staff(?), maybe 4th group of strings (yeah, that's it) - 2nd string, change 10d to 10b (1/2 step lower).

This gives the hands AND the knees a good workout! Thanks!

Okay, here's the next installment. It gets troublesome at the 10th fret, where you need to lower the 3rd string half a step to maintain the picking pattern. If you don't have that change, you can get the same note by raising the 1st string half a step. but the fingering is trickier.

Thanks Bobby. I can't wait to get to work on this. Scale technique is so critical to creative work on any instrument.

I agree. This is an interesting study. There are 7 positions (at least) for the C major scale on the E9th, but most of us only play 3 of them (the 1st, 3rd, and 8th frets). The "F lever" positions at the 6th and 11th frets are fairly obvious, but the remaining two are awkward because they use three changes.

This study really brings out the folly of my own E9th copedent. I tune the second string to D and raise it to a D# with a lever. Well, 5 of the 7 positions use the D#. I should have studied the E9th a bit more closely 22 years ago! Like my Dad used to tell me, "Do as I say, not as I do."

This is working with b0b's first scale exercise above. Let's look at it from a movement stand point!!

We can instantly see that the right hand plays a pattern over and over. 2nd string/4th string then first string/third string...repeat!

Like mentioned above I would play this with a second finger/thumb alternate, then third finger/first finger alternate.

Another would be to use 1/t or 2/t alternate and change hand positions. Key to all of these is that they are in the alternate category. Probably the fastest way would be to use a 1/t 2/t alternate over and over. The thumb would have to move from string 3 to 4 after each move.

Key is learning to start the lick on the first finger. Most players start only with the thumb and some can start with the second finger. Starting anywhere and moving any way you want is the key.

If you have trouble executing this lick, then work on the right hand move without applying anything else. No bar, no pedals, no knees. Just execute the right hand move. If the rh doesn't work there's no need to apply pedals, bar or knees...joe
