Would anyone be interested in learning to make YOUR OWN ARRANGEMENTS of melodies and tunes from a recording?I have been really surprised at how many folks seem to need a sheet of tab to be able to learn a new song. There's more to being a steel player than picking string 5 and pressing the A pedal. If I get enough encouragement, I will do a CD course that will take simple melodies -- like old gospel or country tunes -- and put together several different arrangements using different harmonies and styles. If not, I'll just crawl back under my rock. ------------------ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page 2003 Fessenden S/D-12 8x8, 1969 Emmons S-12 6x6, 1971 Dobro, Standel and Peavey Amps |

Larry,I think that your idea is a great one. Many players, simply need a little help in constructing the voicings of a melody...the string/fret/pedal/lever combinations around the melody (and correct chords)that suits them. There are a ka-jillion ways to play 'Release Me'...but, every steel player prefers it "their way". I think that your idea can help them accomplish that. I look forward to seeing your CD course. You'll do a great job. Go for it! Best regards, bUd |

Sounds like a great idea...This method would be more beneficial in learning the instrument, seems to me, as opposed to just memorizing a tune by tab and rote. |

I'm looking for a dozen or so replies to make it worth my time and effort. I would love to do it, but ONLY if enough people will really take advantage of it.I thought this was the best place to post this inquiry, since the most common topic I see here is 'Got tab for . . . . . .' Learning to create your own arrangements takes effort. Skills must be developed, but I believe that anyone can make his/her own music. Listening to this CD and reading the written material WILL NOT BE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO. You will need to practice the process and learn where to find chords and scales on your guitar -- possibly even learn a little music theory. If you apply yourself the returns can be substantial. I'm willing to put in some time if you are. But you will have to let me know, either by EMail or by replying to this post. ------------------ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page 2003 Fessenden S/D-12 8x8, 1969 Emmons S-12 6x6, 1971 Dobro, Standel and Peavey Amps |

I'm just getting started with steel guitar. I don't consider myself a musician. I can force a melody out of several different instruments but that is about all. Your plan seems to be a tool that could help turn me from an instrument player into a musician. Please sign me up. |

I'll bite! I'm new (well, actually I'm old, but my steel thinks I'm new) and learning by studying chords structures and by listening hard. Lots of musical experience, but as so many others have said, steel is different... Let's see what you can come up with! Steve |

Looks like you're getting a consensus, Larry- I'd love a copy too! Several of the available courses hint at the process, (Scotty's Mel bay stuff comes to mind), but a course that really makes the connections between melody and PSG arrangement styles should really be a winner. Go get 'em.------------------ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

I really appreciate all the encouragement, guys. PLEASE REALIZE * This is a VERY AMBITIOUS PROJECT * I just signed on to a road gig and am spending 4 or 5 days a week in rehearsals right now and will be touring for most of the summer. What happens after that is not clear at this time, but my time is not nearly as free as it was when I originally posted this concept. * I WILL DO IT, and have actually begun to rough out the material, but it will not happen quickly.I'm HOPING I will be able to get it (or at least the first installment/volume of it) done by sometime this fall -- maybe November or so. My current thinking is that I will start out with the BASICS -- very simple melodies -- and progress, possibly through several lessons. I believe it will be worth the wait. Please bear with me. People have volunteered to help with several aspects of the production of the material and I will appreciate the help when the time comes. Thanks in advance for your patience. EMail me directly if you have ideas or if you would like to discuss any aspect of the 'Tab: DIY' project. ------------------ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page 2003 Fessenden S/D-12 8x8, 1969 Emmons S-12 6x6, 1971 Dobro, Standel and Peavey Amps |
