It was suggested I post this, although you can avail yourself of Mr. Stacy Phillips' version in his book Hawaiian Steel Guitar Vol. 2.

Hula Blues

Hope you guys/gals find this useful.

For those who are interested, here is some explanatory material:

C6 Tuning

Analyzing Hula Blues

This was some prep material for a planned book that, due to time constraints, is probably never going to happen. Thus, when you see the occassional "...in this book..." glaring at you, please realize that one never stops dreaming... but one should suffer no delusions of granduer.

Hope you guys/gals find this useful.

Craig,

You have done an outstanding job.

By this work you have served the Steel Guitar Forum community well.

I immensely appreciate it.

Can we have more, please?

Damn, can't get it to open? Let me try the other computer in the house. I got the two tutorials to open but not the main tab, maybe the way my download of adobe reader went today has a problem? Craig, way pro work. Best I have ever seen! My adobe down load 7.1 must not have worked right on my computer today cause my girl friends Adobe 5.1 on here computer opened the main tab fine, looks great. This must be the first time Jules Au See Tab (note for note) has ever appeared on the world wide web, pretty darn cool.

Craig,

Could you give a little synopsis of how The Power Tab Editor works?

The tabs it produces are outstanding.

Does it take long to produce a tab or is it a complicated procedure?

Can you put notes in and get the corresponding numerical tabs?

I certainly would like to start doing some tabs.

This has really aroused my curiosity.

Really fine work, Craig. You've really broken some new ground with your analysis of the C6th tuning and of the Hula Blues transcription. There is so little material on the market for steel guitar so this is something players really crave.

John McGann and I are about a third of the way through on a new book of lap steel solo transcriptions. Both Hula Blues and Sweet Corn were on our list as well. I know how much effort you must have put in and I'm very appreciative of your generosity in sharing it on the forum.

Don, I'm a big fan of PowerTab and ...at least for me... it is fast and easy to use. It's a very basic editor, highly intuitive, but it has its limitations to be sure. I find I can tab with it about as fast as I can do a pencil-and-paper tab.

Unfortunately no one has put a bunch of money into Brad's product in spite of entire tab sites using his freeware (for instance, refer to Mike's Guitar Tab site from the U.K.) Thus, it appears Brad is about ready to call it quits. No new versions, no inovations. You can hardly blame the guy.

Jesse asked about the "tied notes" function. The function bars are "dockable" and I put these ones at the bottom of my editor. The button displays 2 quarter notes tied to one another. The trick is to edit the second note. If you try editing the first note to be tied, nothing will happen.

Don, I suggest experimenting with PowerTab and its functions will become clearer with use. I found I can do all sorts of things with it, including guitar fingerpicking tabs with thumb picks with the stems pointing down while the finger picks have the stems pointing up. The finished results look very pro.

I have many more tabs in my collection but they are of the pencil-and-paper variety, although I can post these as jpegs. Please stay tuned.

Andy, looks like I did the same thing to you that happened to me. I had planned a tab book that included Hula Blues when Stacy Phillips included it with his second Hawaiian steel guitar book. I thought: well, there goes that idea. Now it appears I've pre-empted your book on these 2 tabs at least with my well-meaning but artless contribution. I apologize.

Craig.

Fantastic job Craig!

One comment:

On the triplet lick that begins bar 12, instead of what you have written, I have found this to be much easier and cleaner:

First note (A): Play open 3rd string
2nd note: (Bb): Play first fret, 3rd string (as a hammer-on, not plucked)
3rd note: (C) : Play open 2nd string

Best regards,
Bill

Craig, absolutely no apolgy necessary! What you've done is very well thought out and a selfless act of sharing. We'll probably still include those tunes in our book - they're classics. The forum is all about sharing. When there's a good product that comes to my attention via the forum I often buy it. I hope others feel that way about products I have for sale. At the same time, John McGann and I have both been moved to freely share arrangements, info, etc, here. So no guilt on your part, buddy - just a big pat on the back for your efforts.

I am going to take your suggestion to play around with Power Tab.

Can you put notes from a song in and then get the corresponding numerical tabs to appear?

Thanks for your help.

Don, the way PowerTab works... and it's one of the few computer tab systems that is limited this way... is that you can only enter the fret numbers to the tab portion of the notation. The notes then appear above this automatically.

One thing I have noticed is the notes are not always one-hundred-percent accurate with respect to accidentals. Also, if you transpose up or down the accidentals don't always make an accurate transition.

PowerTab is useful for a lot of things and a lot of folks use it. That's why it's so discouraging that no one has decided to pump a bunch of money into it to improve it. C'mon, you greedy capitalists!!!

I figured out how to use Power Tab now and Craigs suggestion to the problem I was having fixed things. But I'm still having a problem with all the down loads that are supposed to let me open and send tab out on the internet. I can write it out now perfectly, I just can't open it from the net or send it out because the free adobe I down loaded is not working for me? I don't have the cash to buy adobe, so I guess I'm stuck in the mud untill I can fix this problem.

Craig, I'm slowly getting through your Tab on Hula Blues and enjoying it very much. In fact, all the stuff you posted I've gone through and enjoyed it a great deal, not to mention learning a few things. Thanks again, maybe you should reconsider that book?

Basil, it's free to download and it's only for six strings. Just search for "Power tab" and the home page will come up. I'm still trying to figure out how to take out extra measures and how to give a song a title. After your done tabbing, the program plays back the music so you can hear how it sounds!
