C'mon Buddy! Tell us who YOUR favorite steel players are! We all know of your respect and admiration for Garrett and Day. You yourself told me that you loved Billy Bowman's playing and even recorded his "Midnight in Ole Amarillo". You have complemented Bobby Koefer and given him some credit for your "Night Life" composition. We wait with baited breath!

Pedal players all have something in common.
An undying love for the instrument and total respect for anyone that plays it well and feels the same way!
And Buddy by the way, will you autograph my Grandma's dentures? Tell the Mrs. that Tammy and I said hello.

As long as Lloyd Maines is in there somewhere, someone else can fill in the other 9, and put them in any order you want; just look at all the names listed so far, it's a win/win situation. But 10 slots still ain't enough...

E.d. You are so right when you say 10 just is not enough. Actually 50 wouldn't be either. But there are just not 50 Buddy Emmons or Chalkers,Franlins ect. 10 gets the creme to the top.No matter what 10 someone chooses.

back a few yrs ago when jimmy day was onw/willie nelson and all the stars would introduce their steelman as #1; willie at panther hall in ft worth asked jimmy what # he was. Jimmie held up 2 fingers. Willie sais why #2? Jimmy said everyone else was #1 so he must be #2. Not wishing to outdo a Buda Texan, If Day was #2, I have always claimed that I must be #3.

These folks are listed in more or less the order in which I was exposed to them, or knew who they were by name....

Red Rhodes
Speedy West
Joaquin Murphy
Leon McAulffe
Ernie Ball
Jerry Garcia
Herb Steiner (Alvin Crow days)
Buddy Emmons
Cindy Cashdollar
Paul Franklin

There are two unknows to add to my list - one is whoever is playing steel on Brad Paisley's "Nervous Breakdown". The second requires a short story.

In the early 80s (maybe late 78 or 79) I was in Nashville for the evening after finishing some work in Knoxville. I was walking downtown around 10pm and heard a steel guitar from this little shop. I stopped and the guy inside came out into the street and started talking to me about music, the steel guitar and this new all aluminum psg he was building. I remember he climbed up on it to show me how strong the thing was. Then he sat down at a finshed one and played. What a beautiful sound. He then asked me to sit down and that was my first time playing a modern psg. I don't know who he was or if his steel is still around, but I'll never forget that night or the sound.

It's difficult to nail down ten players. But here are my favorites and the ones who had (have) influenced me the most (in no particular order so I'll list them alphabetically by last name):
Buddy Cage
Jimmy Day
Buddy Emmons
Lloyd Green
John Hughey
Pete Kleinow
Ralph Mooney
Joaquin Murphey
Speedy West
Rusty Young

Others who I feel need to be on the list but because its only ten, there ain't no mo' room. So, this is my alternate list (not limited to ten).....I can't do it, there ain't enough bandwidth. You all know who they are 'cause you're thinkin' of 'em right now!

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

It is too hard to recognize all the great steel guitar players. But you asked for our Personal Opinion of our own favorites. This list is no reflection on all the top great pickers that are not on the list. The top 10 players whom I admire a lot and who have been a part of my playing career.

Maurice Anderson
Alvino Rey
Jeff Newman
Curly Chalker
Speedy West
Herb Remington
Pete Drake
Julian Tharpe
Jauquin Murphy
Buddy Emmons- last but not last.

You asked for 10. That is impossible to do..al

John that PSG builder might have been Lee Wheeler who had a shop down off of Broadway (lower) and he would approach people in that manor. In Fact he approached yours truly (work apron and all)because I had a DEKLEY T shirt on and showed me a D-14 he had just finished.

1) Buddy Emmons (He can do it all!)Plays behind a singer better than anyone I ever heard!
2) Jimmy Day (He could play a slow song, prettier or sadder than anyone)
3) Curly Chalker (He could do it all, too)
3) Doug Jernigan (Jazz CD, "Jazz On Ten")
3) Weldon Myrick (Great Connie Smith recordings)
3) Hal Rugg (Altered Ego)
3) Jimmy Crawford (Ahead of his time!)
3) Lloyd Green (Early Paycheck recordings, then he went commercial)
3) John Hughey (Just plays what needs to be played)
3) Paul Franklin Jr. (Awesome player.Just don't like the new so-called country)
3)Joaquin Murphey (Great album, recorded August 24, 1976. Buddy played bass on it)
3) Sonny Garrish (Very unique style)
3) Tommy White (Look out)
Don't like to label the "great" players of the steel guitar in any numerical order. The
above players are my personal favorites and stylists. There are some great players out there, but I think of these individuals as stylists.
