I have asked Nick Barraclough of the BBC if he will do a steel guitar special on his country programme and he has agreed.

He wants me to give him an all time top ten so now is your chance to have a say.

I am not as knowledgeable as some of you guys but I would start it off with

'Slowly' - Web Pierce
'Look at Us' - Vince Gill
Something from the Charley Pride 'Live at Panther Hall' CD

Any suggestions?

Just to clarify - Nick says songs where the steel has been a major part of the songs success - no instrumentals.

Night Life: Ray Price with Buddy Emmons. But why not an instrumental where the steel was successful in its own right? I'm thinking about "Sleepwalk". Very famous.

I agree with both JC and GMc on their selections. My others would be:
"The Other Woman" by Ray Price (Emmons)
"Half a Mind" by Ernest Tubb (Emmons)
"One's on the Way" by Loretta Lynn (Rugg)
"Rainy Day Woman" by Waylon Jennings (Mooney)
"Houston" by Larry Gatlin (Emmons)
"Don't Even Know Her Name" by Alan Jackson (Franklin)
"Lost in the Feelin'" by Conway Twitty (Hughey)
"Once a Day" by Connie Smith (Myrick)
I think the steel on each of these cuts, in some form or another, shaped the recording.

I know there's not supposed to be any instrumentals listed, but for an opening, closing and a "to the break" tunes:
Four Wheel Drive (Emmons)
Raisin' the Dickens (Emmons)
Steel Guitar Rag (Charleton)
There's my three and a half cents...

My best,
Ernie

I'd have to say "Farewell Party" with Lloyd Green on the steel. Like Eddie Stubbs likes to say, "are there any questions?"

How about some Green Light by Hank Thompson with the Bobby Garrett on steel? There are some really sweet sounds on that one.

I'll leave suggestions of specific songs to others, but a program like that should in some way cover a range of steel players and their styles: in no particular order, I think the following should be represented:
Buddy Emmons
Jimmy Day
Pete Drake
Paul Franklin
Curly Chalker
John Hughey
Sneaky Pete Kleinow
Lloyd Green
... and two more !!
(then convince him to do a historical show of all non-pedal steelers )

Coal Miner's Daughter (Hal Rugg)
A Way To Survive (Buddy Emmons)

I'll pick these two that no one else has mentioned. "I'll Come Runnin", Connie Smith...featuring Weldon Myrick, and "Motel Time Again", Johnny Paycheck...featuring Lloyd Green on steel. These two songs were sucessful (IMHO) due to the steel work!

Classic stuff.

My top ten picks are:

1. Bouguet of Roses--Little Roy Wiggins (EA)

2. Next to Jimmie--Jerry Byrd (FH)

4. There Goes the Green Light--Bobby Garrett (HT)

5. We could--Walter Haynes (LJD) (The ALL time greatest, EVER)

6. Once a Day--Weldon Myrick (CS)

7. Together Again--Tom Brumley (BO)

8. The Bridge Washed Out--Lloyd Green (WM)

9. Night Life--Buddy Emmons (RP)

10. One's On the Way--Hal Rugg (LL)

11. When I Call Your Name--Paul Franklin (VG)

12. Look at Us--John Hughey (VG)

Ok okay!!

I know I said 10, but there is NO way I could ever leave a single one of the above out. I honestly believe that 10 is simply too few. More aptly 20 would have been better IMHO.

The other 8 would have been:

13. Those Healing Hands of Time--Buddy Emmons (RP)

14. The Shadow of Your Smile--Curley Chalker (SH)

15. Half a Mind--Buddy Emmons (ET)

16. Don't Rock the Jukebox--Paul Franklin (AJ)

17. Farewell Party--Lloyd Green (GW)

18. Slowly--Bud Isaacs (WP) (the beginning of the PSG as we know it)

19. Mansion on the Hill--Jerry Byrd (ET)

20. Blue Bayou--Sneaky Pete (LR)

God bless all steel guitar players,

carl

You gotta include some pop songs, folks:
  • Someday Soon - Judy Collins (Emmons)
  • Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills and Nash (Garcia)
  • Top of the World - The Carpenters (Emmons, Rhodes)
  • Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton (Maness)

For country songs, here's my pick:
  • San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills (McAuliff)
  • Cold, Cold Heart - Hank Williams (Helms)
  • D.I.V.O.R.C.E. - Tammy Wynette (Green)
  • Swingin' Doors - Merle Haggard (Mooney)
  • Highway 40 Blues - Ricky Skaggs (Bouton)
  • Look At Us - Vince Gill (Hughey)

Well, I've reached a total of ten but I don't think that the list would be complete without "Sleepwalk".

Bobby, that D.i.v.o.r.c.e was important as it showed a lot of use of the "F" pedal in those early years. Very smooth......al

Wow, after reading all these suggestions I can't pick a top ten. Gotta go with Johan on the Dan Dugmore suggestion, but how about Allison Moorer's "Soft Place to Fall?" Same sound taken to an extreme. hauntingly beautiful. I would add Jimmy Day on R.P.'s "Crazy Arms", which was of course written by another great peddler (whose "Rainy Day Woman" is a must also.)

Since you asked.......

1) Close Up The Honky Tonks-Buck Owens and Don Rich Duet (Tom Brumley on Steel)

2) Sweethearts in Heaven-Buck Owens and Don Rich Duet (Jay McDonald on Steel)

3) A Way To Survive (Buddy Emmons on Steel)

4) Day Sleeper-Skeets McDonald (Buddy Emmons on Steel)

5) The Only Thing I Want(Just Went Home)-Cal Smith (Buddy Charleton I think on Steel)

6) Standing In the Shadows-Hank Williams Jr (Pete Drake on Steel)

7) Wrong Company-Wynn Stewart (Ralph Mooney on Steel)

8) I Can't Get Used to Being Lonely-George Jones (Sonny Curtis on Steel)

9) Saw Mill-Buck Owens (Jay McDonald on Steel)

10) Someone Told My Story-Merle Haggard (Ralph Mooney on Steel)

I know I forgot a hundred others but Close Up The Honky Tonks is the best, in my opinion.

I'm not going to attempt to contribute in terms of the top 10 country songs for steel. Here are some ideas from other types of music.
For a UK audience I would include at least one Dire Straits tune featuring Paul. Calling Elvis is good, but I think the the live version of Walk of Life is a killer.

Nightlife is a classic, showing the jazz side of the instrument, used in a popular context.

Lay Lady Lay. Pete Drake at his best, and Dylan is probably more popular in the UK than here.

I don't want to bring up the Garcia religious wars, but 'Teach your children' is something that most listeners can relate to, and it was definitely influencial (for better or worse).

Gerry Rafferty had some killer steel in many of his hits. Baker Street and others. The problem is, the steel player was so good at getting that clean strat sound, probably nobody knew it was steel.

I would have picked many that were chosen, but to not be redundant.......Was the question about one steel player?
1.I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry-H.Williams(Jerry Byrd)(I had to lead of with this! Jimmy wouldn't mind since he "stole" from Jerry's "Among My Souvineers" to put it on Willie's "Funny How Time Slips Away")
2.Farewell Party-J.Bush(1967 Jimmy Day)(THE BEST EVER!)
3.Danny Boy-J.Bush(Jimmy Day)
