I bought this beautiful old Speedy West Custom from Ricky Davis a while back, rebuilt it and played it out with the Country All-Stars. The pedal action is like butter, due to the very direct push-pull mechanism. Its single-coil tone is really nice - somewhere between an Emmons and a Sho-Bud. It also has a "doo-wah" tone control between the necks that sounds just like Speedy! Here's a picture:

There are more pictures and the copedent chart here.

I thought it would be fun to have a public auction. To bid, just post a reply. If you want to bid in private, send me an email at quasar@b0b.com and I'll post it as an anonymous bid.

Buyer pays shipping. Auction ends at midnight PST on Jan 26, 2001.

I'll start it off at $500 because there's no way I'd sell it for less than that. Minimum increment is $10. Do I hear $510?

Hi Bobby, What a beautiful guitar! And with the old tone control, we used to use for Doowah.
I looked at your tuning chart and it appears to me that you can play most all the E9 and C6 stuff on it. No problem.
D9th instead of C6th is good too without that pesky G#.
Naturally every contemporary lick is not set up on it. But hey! Who needs it. I'll bet Buddy Emmons could play up a storm on it.

I know it probably is a heavy guitar but I'll place the first public bid of $510. just to get it started. OK?...al

Thanks, Al.

Actually, it is still E9th on the front neck. It's not hard on high G# strings - I've never broken one on it. It's set up for a wound 6th string, because the pull balances better that way (like on the Carter-Starter).

The back neck is D6th with the standard C6th changes. It could be strung up to C6th but the pedals would have to be retuned, I'm sure.

Oh man what a guitar. This is the one I got from my best friend Gary Carpenter. Out of all the live tapes Gary has; he said the sound of this Marlen is on of the best sounding guitars he has heard himself play live.
I also loved this guitar truely and hated giving it up; but I had to make a house payment(and you know how that goes). If I had the means right now; there wouldn't be anyone that could out bid me on this one>as I would go all the way>"it is that good". I didn't have any problems with the limited changes; as I easily found a new way to play the same old licks; and even learned more about the tunings playing this guitar for 1 year; than I learned in 10 years.
With the Research I did on this guitar; I found it to be either number 1 or 2 that Leonard built for Speedy. I have a picture of Speedy playing this guitar along side Billy Bowman and his white Marlen. So that dates the guitar about '68 or '69. Marlen wanted Speedys endorsement around that time; and built Speedy a new one every year for 5 or 6 years after that>So these are collectors if you can find them. I can't believe b0b started the auction at 500.00; I'd start bidding at 1500.00 for it right now if I had the money.
I hope this helps answer some more questions about this un-touchable guitar.

Looks like I might lose a bundle on this one. I have to sell it, though, to help pay for the new Williams I ordered.

Lose a bundle? Don't you have a hidden reserve? Haven't you learned anything from eBay?

Since b0b provided a cut-off date and time, nobody! We can even wait and "snipe" at the last minute.

I wonder if b0b will let us email our maximum bid, and he'll automatically bid for us, too?

Nine days to go yet. You might do OK, after all. The eagle flies on Friday, and I think you've got a bunch of guys just waiting until Friday the 26th to jump on this one.
That said, I'll raise to $660.

Since Jeff's bid didn't meet the $10 increment, Anonymous Bidder #3 still has the high bid at $825.

Do I hear $835? Only a few days left.
