I'm thinking about buying a Marantz PMD101 tape recorder/player with the half-speed function and pitch control.

Anybody have any experience with these, or pros and cons to offer? Anything else with similar function that's a better buy?

Thanks in advance for any comments, Bob

Bob--I've got the PMD221. It is a 3 head mono machine with the half-speed and pitch control. Those 3 heads are really over-kill for how I use it and the unit was pretty expensive some years ago when I got it but it certainly does the job. I suspect, though, that I would get something cheaper if I were shopping today and wanted it for lick work by my steel's side. I'm not familiar with the 101. How much $$? Marantz makes a nice machine if the money's right. But not worth paying a premium for. (IMO, of course.)

Bob I have the Marantz recorder play back you describe. I think it is great for learning passages from recordings. If you can get the passage you want on cassette tape, you can slow it down and learn it. One time I could not find the music to a Ray Price tune. I took the Marantz recorder, slowed Ray's voice down, and matched Ray's voice notes to notes on my E9th neck. I got it exactly like Ray sang it--- NOTE-FOR-NOTE!

Hi Bob
I recently purchased a TR-400 Digital recorder from Janet Davis Music Inc.
It has eight different speed settings with the pitch always the same. It maybe is a bit more useable for practice as it will repeat over and over as many times as you want and no moving parts. I find it works very well after you get the hang of using it. It also has a feature that removes everything but the bass from a recording, this is nice for praticing licks and breaks to get the timing right. Here are the addresses for two suppliers.

I hope this helps.

I think the PMD series are all basically the same circuitry with a few refinements .As Jon, I have a PMD 221 and sure do like it. Bought it on ebay for 154.00 last year, they're on sale there most of the time.Recorded the entire convention last year, it made some super tapes.
Did you know you can pop a blank tape in ,press record-play and pause buttons, plug your guitar in the input and a set of headphones in the output and it makes a fine monitor for playing your steel quitely.

In addition to the 1/2 speed function, the PMD101 has a pitch control which is something I'm looking for. I want to use it to adjust the pitch of rhythm tracks to 400 Hz (drives me crazy, I have a lot of good tracks but they're all slightly off and none are the same).

Best price I'm finding for a new one is $245 for the unit, plus $10 for the AC adapter, plus $12 for shipping. It's sounding a bit steep which is one reason I'm asking for advice. I've looked at Homespun, Elderly, and J & R World so far.

I like the idea of being able to plug in one of my vol pedal outputs into the mic input for recording practice sessions.

The digital recorder sounds pretty cool. Can you adjust the pitch if you want to?

I don't need the 3 head model either which is more expensive. BTW, the Marantz is monoaural, not stereo.

Thanks for your comments, always welcome more.

Bob, unless you're dead set on a new ones try this search url for one on eBay. You can also check the search for completed sales for a comparison of the prices they have been selling .

Bob Jackson -
I've been real curious about that TR-400. Does it give you a decent sounding playback at low speed? Some of these types of units that I've tried had pretty crappy signal-to-noise at half speed or less. A lot of tick, tick, tick, etc. from poor sampling interval, I guess. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I have a Marantz PMD420 (I believe that is the correct model number). Anyway, the one I have is a stereo model, with dolby and dbx noise reduction, variable speed control and lots more. The only disadvantage to the stereo model is that it does not have the half speed as some of their other models. I taped the convention in St. Louis a couple years ago using it and some PZM microphones, the results were very good.

Joe L., I think that's good advice about e-bay prices, but in the case of a used electro-mechanical device like a tape recorder, I'd be wary of dealing with anybody but a fellow forumite. You don't have one for sale do you?
