A few years ago, I was urged to try DR brand
strings on my guitars. The first thing that you notice about DR strings is that the wound strings are noticeably heavier than the same gauge string from another manufacturer. This increased mass means significantly better sustain. Except for one brief "indiscretion" with Elixirs (I wasn't impressed) I have consistently used DR's on my PRS and Stratocaster. Naturally, I wondered if I would also get better sustain with DR's on my steel.

I contacted Anthony Corona at DR and he agreed to make up two sets (E9 and C6) for my LeGrand II. The difference between the DR's and other brands I have used on my steel is substantial.

If anyone else would be interested in trying DR's I urge you to contact Anthony. The folks at DR wouldn't mind venturing into the steel guitar string market if there is a possibility of sufficient demand. I hope they do because now I'm spoiled. Anthony can be e-mailed at anthony@drstrings.com.

What do they charge for their strings? Are they available in stainless?

David,

The set they put together for me was nickel plated steel. As to price, I'm not sure since they haven't yet marketed pedal steel sets. However, the price for their six string sets is comparable to any other major brand. You can e-mail Anthony... I'm certain he would be glad to answer any questions.

A local steeler that owns a music store swears by the DR's. He says he uses them on his Zum and has tried to get me to try some. But I'm through "trying" different brands and will stick with the George L's.

Jack,

Please let me know who the guy is. I need him on my side. DR will package these for pedal steel if there is a demand. If your friend owns a music store that's a possible customer.

The music store is Musician's Supply, New Port Richey, Fl. The owners name is Al Partridge. He plays an old 80's model Zum and also gives steel lessons.
He is also a TubeWorks/MosValve dealer.

I just spoke with Al at Musician's Supply and he has DR's in pedal steel sets. The only problem is that they don't (as yet) make a .068 with a guitar size ball end... bass size only. I managed to replace the bass ball with a guitar ball (these strings have balls! Sorry I couldn't resist) on the set I got. There is no problem with the E9 set. Anyway, they can be ordered from Musician's Supply, phone (727)849-5803 or
e-mail music@sanctum.com. Incidentally, Al was as effusive as I am about these strings.

Wow, interesting!

I've been using DRs for years with my 6-strings and my bass. I always thought there are no better strings on the market. I's about time they are available for PSG!
