This subject probably gets more posts than any other, but I'll ask some more. Over the years I've done some palm blocking, Left hand thumb blocking and I'm trying a little ring finger blocking. It's pretty effective (and seems easy) when I'm picking with my thumb. but it feels very awkward when I try picking anything other than the thumb. Any pointers from those who like this style of blocking. It certainly gives a distinct sound when I do it right. |

Hey Dean, I use this method and find it works better for me than anything else. I don't even recall his name, but years ago I read about someone who doubled his ring finger under to block and I tried it and have been doing that ever since. I also play lead guitar with thumb and fingerpicks and do the same on that instrument. It just feels more comfortable than any other way. ------------------ [This message was edited by Jerry Hayes on 14 January 2001 at 07:25 PM.] |

I believe Buddy Emmons blocks the upper strings this way, so it can't be all bad! ![]() |

I must admit, it does feel more "natural", at least for thumb picking. If I can only coordinate the other two fingers with it I'll start using it more. |

I do some blocking with the ring finger, as well as the pinky. But, it's not intentional or something I practiced. It's just the result of these two fingers being a little further forward than my palm. Since I play with these two fingers curled under, they naturally rest on the high strings. If it works...do it! |

I block with both the ring and pinky curled under. I think that I learned it from watching Jay Dee at the Palimino all those years. JE:-)> |

After I had been playing about a year or so, I discovered that I was blocking some of my second-finger notes with my ring finger when I noticed the tip of it was smudged with new-set-of-strings-black-gunk...like our last cat, it just sorta snuck in and stuck around until, by the time I really noticed it, I was already used to it and let it stay... ------------------ |

I've used this kind of blocking for years, but now am having a devil of a time trying to unlearn it, in that I am attempting to use 4 picks.... ------------------ |

Buddy does use the tip of his ring finger to block notes played by his middle finger and the fleshy part of the side of his hand for the other ones. Also take note how he holds his hand: With his pinky held up. That way the fleshy part covers a whole lot more area. I think it also has a positive effect on his tone. Knowing what he's doing is one thing. Doing it is another. ------------------ |

Tommy, Does that article have pictures? Are there any plans to get the PSGA archives on line? |
