In the early 70s a friend gave me a Herb Remington album, "Steel Guitar Holiday." I believe all the tunes were written by Herb.
Sam & Oscar,Minni Lani,Deep Beat,Lonesome,
Coo-Coo Creek Hop,Hula Palm,Slush Pump, Beyond Blue,Boot Heel Drag,Palm Tree, and Remington Ride.
I knew Herb was playing the A-6th tuning, but on Deep Beat he was getting a very low note. I knew that note was much lower than the standard A-6th, 8 string tuning. A few years later Tom Bradshaw showed some of the professional artists tunings in one of his publications. I found out that Herb's tuning had an A note on string 7 and that he tuned the 8th string also to A, but one octave lower than the 7th string. Herb is one tricky steel player. Thanks Herb for those great instrumental tunes.

Roger

Roger,

Herb is currently playing a ten string A6th tuning on one of his Remington Sustainmaster pedal steels. See this link for the tuning: http://www.b0b.com/tunings/stars.html#A6hr
He still plays non-pedal as well.
Not sure how many years he's had the 10 string set up.

Respectfully,
Dave Burr

Hi Dave,

I met Herb Remington at Scotty's Convention in St. Louis in 1975. Herb didn't bring a guitar to the convention. Scotty put an 8 string A-6th tuning on one neck of a D-10 Sho-Bud(no pedals)for herb to use. Herb announced during his performance that he had recently(1975) added pedals to a 10 string
A-6th tuning. Herb may not have felt comfortable playing his own guitar in public at that time.

Herb is so great! At a steel show a few years ago, he decided to use a D-8 non-pedal Remington. As he was tuning up the back neck for the first song, he broke a string. He said, "I'll just play it on the front".

He proceeded to play ever tune in his set on the front neck, and every one was in a different tuning. He quickly retuned his front neck between songs by ear. He's a true master of the non-pedal steel, and a national treasure IMHO.

Herb's biggest trick is knowing how to play that thing. And can he play. bOb what you describe is what Herb is all about.

He is like a surgeon with his perfection and
skill,,,,what an operation when he plays.

Hey:
It's nice to see Herb get his due - I loved his playing, so acquired his set of non-pedal instruction tapes. I think any player (veteran or beginner) could get something out of them. There's lots of killer Herb Remington on the 2-CD Bob Wills MGM "Boot Heel Drag" - hats off to Mr. Remington, really - he's an icon is right, and the guy answers his own phone! "This is Herb . . . "

As I said in an archives post, Herby and I are from the same town and took lessons at the same place. As Herby was older than me he was about 3 classes ahead and he would always be playing when our class arrived for our lesson. The teachers would pump us up by saying " you practice as much as Herby does and you will be able to play like that someday". I don't think it worked out that way however. Yrs later I ordered a stringmaster and Freddie Tavares strung it up for me at the Fender factory with two treble strg on the bottom of each tuning. I called Freddie and asked what he was doing to me. He sais that was Herbys tuning and alot of the west coast boys were using it. I said that if it was good enough for Herby it was good enough for me. As I got used to it I had some good sounding stuff using those tunings. Thanks Herb CC
