I'm buying a 1981 push pull, The seller is keeping the Bill Lawrence pick ups currently on the guitar and will replace them with either Emmons or George L pick ups. Any of you guys got any opinions as to which pick up I'd be best off going with, Thanks

I like the stock pickups that are on my 71 Emmons. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with these. The only drawback to them is that 60 cycle hum. I've decided that I can live with the hum and see no need fixing something that isn't broke. Then again, I don't do a whole lot of studio work where hum would be a problem.

You won't kill the great Emmons PP tone with either the Emmons single coils or the George L's, but I'd recommend the E-66 if you go with George Lewis' pickups. I have E-66's in my Fessenden, and single coils in all my PP's (as you know).

The single coil 17k ohm pickup is the classic Emmons sound, and the modern pickups are humbuckers and seem to be hotter and have more punch. So its up to you what you prefer. Neither choice is wrong, IMHO.

However, and don't tell anyone , I'm gonna try a pair of Bill Lawrences in one of my PP's. I can always change back if need be.

Herb,
I'm also getting ready to try a 710 & a 910 in my P/P. I'll report soon.

Unless you do a lot of studio work, the stock single coils get the nod in my book.

I like the stock single coil ones, too. I'd get them from Emmons Guitar and ask if they can be wound at 17K ohm. The current 20k ohm has a mellower tone.

I play a 1979 P/P and as late as today in the studio, the 60 cycle hum is killing me. I have been scared to mess with it, but I think I need to try an L-710. What do you think?

I put my Emmons single coils back in my Legrande D10. I can't tell very little difference between it and my Push Pull with original Emmons pickups. I think they sound better than anything I've used. I also like the 705 Bill Lawrence.

Thanx for all your help guys, turns out their wasn't a choice after all. E-66s it will be. This'll be my first push pull, looking forward to it

Reggie,
The 710 can be really hot with a really bright guitar. I use a Hilton pedal and the combination of the L-710 (actually a 712 -- it's on a 12-string guitar), the Hilton, and my Fessenden was TOO BRITE. I like the 912 better. I've never used anything but sgl coils in my push-pull guitars and noise has not been a problem -- maybe I'm just lucky.

Word is that Bill designed the 900 series to emulate a single coil sound without the hum.

The 710 is designed for a 500k load (connection to a pot pedal). It will be too bright with an active pedal like the Hilton or the Goodrich 10k, but you can fix that by wiring a 500k resistor across the output jack of your guitar.

I have always played dual coil pickups, so the 910 may be my best bet?

Reggie,

The Lawrence 910 will sound awesome in your push-pull Emmons. No hum, same great push-pull tone, but more power. You can't go wrong. I recently installed one in my push-pull and it's definitely all I could have asked for in a pickup.

Hey Bob, I noticed no real brightness difference when using either a Hilton or a 500k pot pedal with my 710's. Could it be something else in your setup that is causing the effect?
