I'm talking about the 80s! It's hard to believe, isn't it? Today, i heard them play Forever And Ever by Randy Travis on the radio. It's been many years since i've heard it. What a great song, great singer, and great RECORDING! Warm, fat, punchy sound... and smooooth. It was one of those times in music history when everything came together perfectly. Did you know that "Forever and Ever Amen" was the first hit song to feature the Pedabro? "The Pedabro looks and plays like a steel, but sounds like a hybrid of the Dobro or resophonic guitar and was built and patented by Paul's father. The first of many hit records featuring the Pedabro was Forever and Ever, Amen by Randy Travis. " ------------------ |

David, I think i learned that info here. I had always thought it was a Dobro®. That picture is the first one i've seen. Looks like a work of art. Thanks for posting it. I think it's cool that a song can have a Pedabro AND a pedal steel at one time - Paul and Sonny. That song's a classic. |

Unfortunately, after searching the archives here, it appears that only 25 were made, and I've already accounted for about 5 of those (people who probably wouldn't sell them). BTW, Paul recorded on "Here and Now" (The Wilkinsons latest CD), using pedabro and lapsteel. Do you happen to know which songs feature the pedabro (rather than the dobro, which was also used)? I'm not sure I'm able to tell the difference (or perhaps the pedabro sounds more like the steel guitar -- in which case I still can't seem to distinguish them). They really worked in some different instruments on the new CD. "Jimmy's Got a Girlfriend" has a sitar at the beginning. And "Hypothetically" (maybe their next single) has a tuba in it. Never thought I'd hear a tuba in a country album. But, Clint's latest album (D'electrified) also has a tuba in one of the songs. I really like that album -- especially the song "Love She Can't Live Without" -- it's enough to almost make a grown man want to cry. ------------------ |

I believe you've just ordered some Peggy Green stuff, David, right? That will give you a good foundation in recognizing the P'bro. It can sound remarkably like a dobro until you hear the pedalling--then because you know what you are listening for you will know what it is--otherwise you would say "what on earth!!" Somebody help me--who was it on the Opry accompanying who last year in a beautiful ballad on Pedobro? |
