Anyone know how the steel player gets that sixth minor change (Bm) on 6/8/10 on Smoke Rings in The Dark? It sounds like he is getting it at the fifth fret (D) pedals down and then getting the 6 minor at the same fret with a knee lever change. Real cool.

You can get the 6 minor by adding the 7th string to the pedals down position, or slide down to the 3rd fret with no pedals and lower the E's. Is one of those the sound you're hearing?

Have you listened to Smoke Rings In The Dark?
Here's whats happening. The band is going to the sixth minor (B), but the steel guitarist is apparently substituting a three minor (F#m)on 6/8/10 by just reasing his B pedal. Quite interesting and different. Its the first time I've run into this sustitution. Real haunting. Anyone have an explanation as to why it works in theory?

The teenage band I'm playing with does this tune, but admittedly I've only listened to the original song once on the tape they gave me, just to get the feel. I'll see if I haven't recorded over the tape yet and listen to it again. I never listen to the top 40 "Country" stations.

Rayman, I think I know the part you're talking about. I went home and worked on the song. The steeler is at fret 5, strings 6 & 8 with the B pedal. He slides from there down to fret 3 releasing the B pedal and engaging the D lever (lowers the E's). Depending on how you look at your guitar, the 3rd fret with a D lever is a D chord but it is also a Bm.

The song does step out of the D scale in the last bar of the chorus for 4 beats. It's a C chord but a 2m will work with A pedal down at the 3rd fret but a C chord sounds better. I will chart the entire song for those that are interested.

Intro: 1 1 6m 6m repeat

Verse 1 1 6m 6m

2m 2m 4 4

1 1 6m 6m

2m 4 1/5 4
intro
verse
chorus 6m 4 1 5

6m 4 1 5

2m 1 3m 4

(C) 4 1 1

Bridge 6m 6m 2m 2m 4

verse
chorus.

Larry. Thanks, but I don't think thats the part I mean. The steel guitarist is Dan Dugmore. I talked to him yeaterday. The part in question is the second verse after "the loneliness surrounds me". He does in fact use 6/8/10 at the fifth with a/b down (D), then releases his b pedal only to play an f# minor at the fifth fret with just the a pedal. The band at that point is playing the sixth minor (Bm). The result as described by Dan is something with a ninth and sixth in it. It is a three minor played against a sixth minor. He said he only did this on guitar before and tried it for effect on the steel. What an interesting result!
