I saw the Derailers do this song on ACL and its the only time I ever heard this song. Is it there song or an oldie I never heard before. If so who did the song originally? Thanks, Will

it is a jack rhodes composition, recorded circa 1955 by both wynn stewart and lefty frizzell, and later on by others. not sure who had it first--if i had to guess i would guess wynn. if i recall, it was his second released recording.

"Waltz Of The Angels" was a hit for Wynn Stewart in 1956. Lefty covered it, as did George Jones. I didn't see the ACL show, but the Derailer's recorded version of this song (Play Me The Waltz Of The Angels) differs from the original, although it retains lyrical and melodic elements from it. The song appears on their album "Full Western Dress". This version was written by Rory Lee and Dennis Knudsen...Nashville writers.
Getting back to Wynn Stewart's "Waltz Of The Angels"...can you guess who played guitar on it?

Interesting. I read an article about the Derailers' where they approached Buck about singing on their redo of the song. Buck told them he played guitar on the original with Wynn. Maybe he was sittin' in the back strumming a 6-string. Ah, who knows?

The derailers version was referring to an old man requesting the original song "The Waltz of the Angles" to remember his wife. The Derailers did a knock out job when I first heard them do it live on the Opry Stage.

I said the flop side was Pins abd Needles because I did not like it. I changed my mind however when I heard Darryl McCalls rendition of it. CC

The flip-flop side of Lefty's version of "Waltz Of The Angels" was "Just Can't Live That Fast Anymore".
