![]() Frank, as I was responding to your post, it occurred to me that there were some I would just as soon have missed...ones that come to mind... * George Harrison, Nassau Coliseum, November 1974...all hype, I would just as soon have been in Bangladesh...and my VW bug died on the Verrazzano Bridge on the way to Glassboro, N.J. with my soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend in it...no sense of humor or adventure... * The "Mud Festival", Pocono Raceway, July 1972..between the fog and the substances, I got lost and couldn't find the track, which was an oval and I was on the infield...daytime hot broiling sun, no shade, no water, no food, no toilets, no place to sit without being stepped on...night-time rain, cold, mud, wet, fog...no way to light a fire, no food, no water, no toilets, no sleep...no music for quite a while..."Bull Angus" (who the hell are they) played loud and long....I could hear 3 Dog Night somewhere in the fog...couldn't see them...I forget who else played (I forget a lot of the 70's)...whoever said "I ain't never had too much fun" wasn't there... * Jethro Tull, Capitol Theater, Passaic, N.J....ho-hum...they sounded better on the stereo when the hash had made me part of the chair I was sitting in... * Electric Light Orchestra, Capitol Theater..you hear one song, you've heard em all... * Richie Havens and others at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Formula One car races...staged to try to keep people out of "The Bog" so they wouldn't steal and burn any more greyhound buses...or drag people out of their cars and torch them (the cars, not the people)....put your teeth in when you sing, Richie!!!...and how long can you listen to somebody banging "Freedom...Freedom..Freedom..." on an out-of-tune six-string...20 minutes or more, apparently...it didn't stop people from burning cars and busses, so I went over there and watched that surreal spectacle...it made me think of "Lord Of The Flies" for some reason, wild-haired shirtless figures jumping and dancing in the dark, silloueted against the flames or illuminated in the flickering light, some people screaming, some people chanting, some cursing...but still it was better than Richie Havens... ...I'm sure there were others that I was too besotted or medicated to remember, but that's five...any others? ![]() 1) David Crosby and Graham Nash at the Anaheim Convention Center around 1974 or so. They were both obviously high, had been arguing, and treated the audience like crap. The biggest disappointment I've ever seen. Even seeing Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hasn't erased the memory of this stinker. 2) Tuxedomoon at the Club Lingerie in LA, sometime in the early 1980s. Their violinist used so many effect pedals chained together that their entire sound was mush. There were many other shows in the running other than those two; unfortunately I was a performer at most of them. ------------------ |

![]() The two times I tried to see Frank Zappa in the early 1980's in LA, the sound was so bad I couldn't tell what songs he was playing. Molley Hatchet and the Outlaws together at the Long Beach Arena was so loud that I probably lost some hearing and had a splitting headache for a week after. That was also in the early 1980's. I walked out on Dylan with the Gratetful Dead. After 3 hours of the Dead, Dylan came out and it took me 10 minutes to figure out what song he was singing. It Nowhere Man by the Beatles. I couldn't take any more. I would like to say the best concerts for me were Niel Young, James Taylor, John Fogerty and Buck Owens. Let's not forget the Desert Rose Band with Jay Dee and John Jorgenson. |

![]() The only one that comes to mind right now is the AC/DC "concert" in Long Beach earlier this year. Did I really pay to do that to myself??? Talk about somebody who can only play one lick - That's Angus. jdg ------------------ |

![]() Hank Jr. was so bad when I saw him at UNC-Wilmington in about 1983 that I don't even want to talk (write) about it. George Strait's soundman could have turned down everything else and turned up the steel just a notch; and more closely resembled his recordings. Other than that I've been lucky. ------------------ |

![]() * Manfred Mann & The Earth Band / Uriah Heep, 1973 @ Selland Arena, Fresno, Ca. I was quite impressed with the Mann set, but Heep was so utterly bizzare onstage (kinky microphone imbibements, "excessive male bonding" if you get my drift...), while all the sheet metal in the tuna can of a crummy venue virated with every putrid nuance of the "Heap"'s noise! * Rick Dank-o & Jeff Beck, Santa Barbara, Ca. County Bowl, early 1980's El Dank-o stumbled onstage so totally drunk that after he caterwailed a couple of out of key songs and had a couple of false starts, the acoustic guitar (which he had attempted to tune onstage for about 3 minutes) was wrenched out of his hands by some roady or stage crewman, who tuned it up in about 10 seconds flat and (with a shrug & grimace) gave it back to Rick. By about ten minutes or so later, the Dankman had oozed off of his stool, swaying uncontrollably on one knee and headed down for the count. He was then basically dismissed as an event entity by the M.C., who did his best to smooth things out and rescue the remaining part of the show. To no avail, though...The sound for Beck was so ungodly too loud as to approach that of (?)...I have no idea! Bletch!!! * PFM / Mahavishnu Orchestra / Jeff Beck, Winterland Arena, S.F. Ca., 1976 Same story, sans Danko. The "sound engineers" had to be as brain-dead as they were deaf. It's not all that hard to set the output level of a concert sound system to where it's not just noise & pain. Not a musical note could be discerned in the din. Painful,++ * David Crosby & Graham Nash "and friends", Jacques Cousteau benefit concert @ Ventura, Ca. County Fairgrounds, early 1980's Poco was the opener and was typically excellent. But after that I/We should have "left the building". Crosby couldn't remember words to songs he'd written(?)and repeatedly stalled the tunes, Nash had nothing to add, Jackson Browne, ditto...to cap it off, the ongoing mutterance of political & eco-banter was quite annoying. Neil Young had been poised backstage earlier to join the show, but when the announcer called him to appear, he would have nothing to do with the onstage slothery. He just shined it & suffered along with everyone else there. I left feeling sorry for Jacques. * Billy & The Beaters / Dave Alvin / Marshall Tucker Band, Greek Theatre, L.A Ca., 1983 Horrendous sound, that's all I remember of it. We bagged it when it just got worse with the headlining act. Go figure.
