and more recently (and on a similar theme) Radney Foster recorded a song several years ago called "Closing Time" that I think is fantastic - from the chorus....

"From now til they lock the doors,
put the chairs up, and sweep the floors -
you won't even cross my mind,
from here until closing time"

The song also begins with a great line...

"Every afternoon at five o'clock
I forget all about you -
there ain't nothing 'bout this honky-tonk
to remind me we're through"

Did you ever see a Robin weep, as Leaves begin to die
That means he's lost the will to live, Im so lonesome I could cry.

"If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?" and "What's the difference being different when it's difference now that looks the same?" or "Oh I wish that I could hurt that way again, at least I'd have you every now and then." Bellamy Bros, John Hartford, and T. Graham Brown.

Since Steve Goodman has already been mentioned, I always liked this passage from his "City of New Orleans."

Dealin' cards with the old men in the club car
Penny a point, ain't no one keepin' score
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
And feel the wheels grumblin' neath the floor

Trivia for Jim C. & any other Steve Goodman fans: Where is Steve Goodman buried?

Answer: Steve was cremated & some of his ashes were buried beneath home plate in Wrigley Field (Home of the Chicago Cubs for those not in the know).

One of my favorites: "If I thought my hand was against you, why I'd cut off my arm and walk off and leave it behind" from the song "I must have done something bad" written by Red Lane, performed by Merle Haggard on the album "Serving 190 Proof".

"Many lonely nights, I lay awake and stare,
At the walls around me, seems I see you standin' there.
And in the darkness, my name I hear you call,
I reach for you, but you're not there at all."------(Blue Memories)

"Guitars, organs, horns, violins, and pianos, how they play.
Grinding out the latest sounds from Music City, U.S.A."----(Kaye)

"Your world was made up of things sweet and good.
My world would never fit in, wish it could.
Two hearts lie in shambles, and oh how we cried,
That's what happens, when two worlds collide."

"I thought I'd make her happy if I stepped aside,
But I knew her love would never set me free.
And even on the morning she became another's bride,
I said they'll never ever take her love from me.

"You'll go anywhere, for a brand-new love affair,
Somebody new who thrills you instantly.
And when the thrill has ceased to chill,
And from your past, I know it will,
There'll always be another, and another,
And another just like me."---(Another)

Lotta really great lyrics in them old songs...that's what Country's all about

"I've got a long list of real good reasons
for everything I've done."

And in the same song:

"I've survived every situation,
knowin' when to freeze and when to run."

I think it's called, "There's Nothing I can Do About It Now." Willie Nelson.

From Waylon and Willie's "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys":

"He ain't wrong he's just different, but his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right."

And from Waylon's "Nashville Bum", all the lines are great but I especially like:

"I look good in cowboy clothes, and I sing through my nose...'ol Webb says that's the way to get 'er done."

"A tall mountain cedar needs no tinsel.
Each sunset always has it's share of gold.
But when I look at you, My Eyes Are Jealous
Of each other, for the beauty they behold."

My Eyes Are Jealous, sung by Jimmy Dickens, and written, I think, by Jimmy Day.

One more: "What happens now, what will I do
with all the memories,
And the dreams of all the things we'll never do."

"I Won't Mention It Again" sung by Ray Price, written by Mullens & Yates.

Since Jim Smith already posted my favorite country lyric, Hank Thompson's line from the song "Mark of a Heel", I'll share a few others (not necessarily country).

"I'm gonna sit on the front porch till the lightnin' bugs show up
And it really gets dark and there's dogs in the trash
It's the first time and the last time all rolled into this time
You make me feel like I just took a bath
You got to laugh and let laugh"
(Shade of all Greens - Guy Clark)

"This guitar is for sale.
I'll let her go cheap,
Tho' she's pretty to look at,
She don't earn her keep.
She can roar like the west wind,
She can weep. She can wail.
But the tunes that she plays
ain't sellin' today,
This guitar is for sale."
(This Guitar is for Sale - Shel Silverstein)

"Your eyes are like a road map
They're looking two different ways
You got your teeth in one hand
And your wig in the other
And you haven't looked this good in days"
(traditional blues lyric)

"Woke up this mornin'
And both cars were gone
Woke up this mornin'
And both cars were gone
Got so low-down dirty
I threw my drink across the lawn"
(a suburban "white-collar" blues lyric - Martin Mull)

"I found a number in the note she wrote,
Deep in the pocket of a real old coat,
It just got by me some way,
I musta had a real bad day.
That's one of the problems
Of life out here on the road,
Li'l notes like this ain't got no area code.
I don't know what to say… I'm havina REAL bad day!"
(Real Bad Day - Taj Mahal)

b0b: Thanks for lettin' me indulge....

Keep on pickin'!
