In one of my recent posts, I saw his name mentioned, and have seen his name a few times here on the forum. He was mentioned in one of the replies to my post about obscure REAL COUNTRY singers. I think I would like to hear some of his songs. Are there any recordings available? Thanks to anyone who can help Jason

My knowledge is limited, but I'll share what I know.
Curtis Potter was the bass player and musical director for Hank Thompson's band from 1959-1971, and I think that is his most heralded position. He also has alot of writing credits (i.e. Case of Sorrow), and I understand he still performs in Texas.
Something tells me he also plays fiddle. He guested on a couple of the Pennington/Emmons swing albums as a vocalist. ((Swingin' our Way and Goin' out Swingin').
I know of a couple of albums on
Step One Records (Down in Texas Today and All I Need is Time) and also a couple on Hillside Records (Can't recall the name, something about Texas, of course )
He may have something out on Southland Records as well.
I hope that's helpful. If anyone has corrections or additions to this info, fire away.

Curtis does indeed have CD's on Southland Records. The Best of Cutis Potter Volume 1. Visit the Southland Records web site for information, or they are avaliable through the ET record shop.If you like Johnny Bush Ray Price, type music, you will enjoy Curtis.
Gary Carpenter is the steel player on Best of CD.IMHO Curtis never got the credit for his ability as a singer in his own right. He will always be known as the bandleader for Hank Thompson.
Curtis also just finished doing a live CD, along with Darrell McCall, this will be awesome. Curtis and Darrell did an album years ago, am sorry to say I can't tell you anything about it except it was titled Curtis Potter/Darrell McCall.
Hope this helps.

Peggy,
I have that Dot album, along w/ several other albums by Curtis. In my estimation, that was hs BEST album. As a matter of fact,I was in the studio, the night that he cut part of that album. Probably,my fav on that album is,"You Comb Her Hair".

hanks guys, I just checked my listings on the Dot albums and saw it in print:
DLP-25988 - Here Comes Curtis Potter - Curtis Potter [1971]

I didn't notice that before, Curtis started cutting solo sides for Dot as early as 1968 while the Brazos Valley Boys and the Hankster were also signed to Dot.

I too have seen Potter listed as a member on Thomspon's band from 1959-1971, but I'm sure the live at the Golden Nugget album from 1961 had Round Boy Stewart on bass and Billy Gray back as bandleader and no Curtis.
Billy went off and did a TV show and other things not long after, so the bandleader role might have changed around then.
Either way, Curtis was on board for most of the 1960s and is on most of Hanks albums from the mid to late 1960s up to 1971 or so when he went out on his own.

I too have heard of the Curtis Potter / Darrell McCall album, but I've yet to hear it.

I have 2 Curtis Potter albums I've had for about 25 years..."Texas Proud"and "Texas Dance Hall Music"...both on Hillside Records."Texas Dance Hall Music"features Darrell McCall and Ray Sanders who along with Curtis do nothing but shuffles. The steel players are Buddy Emmons and Lloyd Green."Texas Proud" is also nothing but shuffles and on the first cut on side 2 Curtis teams with Darrel to do "San Antonio Medley" which is comprised of parts of 3 songs about San Antonio..."Home in San Antone,San Antonio Rose, and There's Still A Lot Of Love In San Antone".This album has Buddy,Lloyd, and Weldon Myrick as the steel players.I listen to these albums often and never tire of the music. It's the real deal!!

Smiley, I have to agree with you,"Here Comes Curtis Potter" is my favorite, not to say I don't like the others, and I do like the New CD, but I think "HCCP" is his best work. I am going to ask him and his record producer to think about re-cutting "You Comb Her Hair" for the volume 2 CD. He does a fine job on that song.

I'd like to see the WHOLE ALBUM re-issued!
Wonder who owns the "masters" on them, since Dot Records is "no more".
