I read somewhere that Johnny Paycheck was no longer touring.

Anyone know how he's doing?

Yeah Jimmy. The first time I heard him play steel, I was astounded with his skill.

It seems like that when someone like him is good at one thing, they are skilled in several things.

Scientists have recently said that gifted people are "wired" for their skills and they went on to say that gifted musicians seem to be especially well wired (mine was a short circuit).

Too bad! I really liked Johnny.

George Jones tells in his book "I Lived To Tell It All" that before Johnny left to pursue a solo career he was George's steel player. This is one of those really sad stories because just before he got really sick, he had received Opry membership, which is something you could see he wanted so badly. I heard him tell in an interview once that when he had appeared on the Opry in the mid to late 70's the Mr. Acuff told Hal Durham he didn't want Johnny on the Opry again until he could clean up his act. I thank the Good Lord he did. Truly one of the great voices of REAL Country Music. He will certainly be in my prayers. Jason

Lyle,
I believe the song you are thinking of is "The Outlaw's Prayer" its the one where he tries to attend church, and is turned away. CDNow has it available on Johnny's "16 Biggest Hits" CD for $9.99. Plus I have also seen it at Wal-Mart too. Hope this helps Jason

John played my steel one night at The Shy Clown Casino ... mid '70s.

Jim Murphy was with his band at the time.

It was "party time" for a week, but I won't go into any details!

Hi ya'll!

Just last week, I bought Daryle Singletary's brand new CD and he's doing lots of old songs:

Love's Gonna Live Here Again
I Never Go Around Mirrors
Walk Through This World With Me
After the Fire is Gone - With Rhonda Vincent
A-11 . . . and
Old Violin . . . and Paycheck is doing a recitation on it.

Just thought ya'll might like to know.

I sincerely hope that someone is visiting him
from time to time.
There are not many newcomers, if any, that can hang your emotions out to dry Like he could.

JP is still stable, but in tough shape. He is still holding his own, and is not on his death bed as we are led to believe from other sources.
They can send cards to my address and I will see that he gets them, when I know that he will read them.

Smiley,
Just exactly what is wrong with JP? I'd heard he'd been sick but hadn't heard with what. We had him for a guest artist at the Virginia Country Music Association's award show one year and I got to shoot the bull a little with him about his old days in LA in the sixties. He had a band called Johnny Paycheck and the Cashiers and used to do the morning session on the weekends at the Blue Room in La Puente, Calif. He was playing steel then.

Hi Leigh!

Playing all that "old wore out stuff" (as our guy singer/guitar player calls it), we can't play the bigger clubs that want the "new country music" and line dance stuff, so we play some of the Moose Lodges -- Clinton, Shallotte, Oak Island. I don't know if I want you to come hear me or not until I get better on the steel! Ha! (Of course, that will be YEARS from now!) Sounds like you've played with some really good pickers! Seriously, if you want to come out sometime, you have to sing some with us too since I know now what a great voice you have! We're playing Clinton July 20th, Shallotte the first weekend in August I think, Whiteville (restaurant/bar) either the first or second Friday (they're not sure yet -- 1st anniversary thing), Clinton again August 17th, and Shallotte (at Sonny's) August 31st. If you want to come out, give me a call -- I'm in the book. Or you might just come out and not let me know you're there so I won't be so intimidated! Ha!

Talk to you soon!
Kim

Barbara,
To answer your question, sadly, JP is not in the Hall of Fame. Very, very few people can put the feeling into a country song the way he could. Also, he contributed some wonderful high tenor harmony to other peoples records. Anyone who loves good real country should hear the harmony he contributed to a handful of Skeets McDonald records. Country at its very, very best, and maybe the best harmony vocal on a country record. Jason

JP told the group I was working with when we backed him up that George Jones "stole" his style of singing. FYI, he is also an excellent writer. He was the writer on "Touch My Heart" that went to #1 for Ray Price.
