![]() Little Red worked with Blackie Crawford & the Western Cherokees, Hank Thompson, Hoyle Nix, as well as Ray Price, plus others.. now that's a great history right there. A lot of Forumites will probably know that I love tracking down sidemen, I've been trying to get more info on the bands of George Jones, Ray Price, Conway Twitty, Dave Dudley, Porter Wagoner and Faron Young, and I'm always on the look-out for vintage live material where it's the road band with the singer. |

![]() Jason, as I'm sure you know, Little Red worked also with the great Jim Reeves and was on the " Mexican Joe" session. When you compile info on these artists of the past, please make it available for purchase in a " Where Are These Sidemen Now" booklet! |

![]() Jason, I worked with George Jones back in the late 50's or early 60's, there was me, Georgie Riddle and the Adams Boys, that I remember. If fact I was working with Jones at the panther hall in FtWorth when my Fender 1000 and Fender amp was stolen. I got hold of one of Hal Ruggs old steel and couldn't keep it in tune and was taking to long to get me another steel set up to the way I have mine, so I lost the job with Jones. That's the way things go some times. |

![]() Tony, cool.. I'll email you soon. An example of my notes, a complete mess and with some info from Jones' bio (which did actually contradict itself in a few places). JONES BOYS The first permanent member was George Riddle who joined Jones on harmony vocals and rhythm guitar in 1960. He stayed with Jones for four years and eventually got to sing and play on his records. Johnny Paycheck works with the group on and off, circa 1962? In 1964 Jones has an uptempo hit with ‘The Race Is On’ The Jones Boys album "Country & Western Songbook" 1964 LP Musicor MS-3017 Circa 1965 Buddy Emmons works with the band. That same year Sonny Curtis (steel) joins the group alongside Glen Davis. In 1967 he opens the Possum Holler Nightclub in Nashville on Lower Broadway St. The Jones Boys played there fairly reguarly, especially as Jones was touring infrequently. In 1968 guitarist Solomon marries Jones’ duet partner Melba Montgomery. The 1968 into 1969 group featured James Hollie (bass, who’d worked with Wynn Stewart in Texas), Freddie Haws (drums), both from Dallas, Charlie ‘Grumpy’ Justice (fiddle), and Sonny Curtis (steel); both from Ohio. The Jones Boys album "My Boys, the Jones Boys" 1970 LP Musicor MS-3182 ========= Throught the early 1960s the group went through various bandmemers, including Jimmy Day, drummer James Kirkland, Henry Strzelecki (ex-Hawks), Mel Rogers, Bobby Dyson, and Roy Aldrige. The Blue Boys as the 'Lump Lump Boys' their hillbilly gag group persona, perform at a live broadcast of KHAT radio, Phoenix, Arizona on May 18, 1961. At the time The Blue Boys consisted of James Kirkland (guitar), Mel Rogers (drums), and Dean Manuel (piano). The core band settled with Leo Jackson rejoining as guitarist and bandleader, Dean Manuel (piano), Bud Logan (bass, vocals), and Jimmy Orr (drums). After the death of Reeves and Manuel, the rest of the group Leo Jackson, Bud Logan (bass, vocals), and Jimmy Orr (drums), go on to work as the Blue Boys with Bunky Keels on piano. In 1968 they recorded as The Blue Boys Featuring Bud Logan, but ultimately split that year. |
